Retro-Sonic Distortion (Boutique Rat)

Post by dorfmeister »

Just picked up a Retro-Sonic Distortion cheap on E-bay.

It is a rat inspired pedal with an LM308 chip and three clipping options.

Looking forward to cranking that bastard up.      :omg:

Anybody into Rats or Rat-O-Likes?

I really want a Rat, and I was looking at the Retro-Sonic Distortion. However, I think I'm going to go the BYOC for versatility.

There is, man. It's position two on the 6-way selector switch.

$90 shipped - new. Usually goes for $189 at most on-line dealers. I figured I couldn't get a boutique rat clone for cheaper than that. I've been wanting to either pick one up for quite awhile. Nearly pulled the trigger on a Brown Rabbit a couple of times....almost bought a pre-built byoc.....the price was right on this one and Retro-Sonic has an impeccable rep for quality and service. :excellent:

That is a killer deal! Was it just lucky or a sale item?

I got a Lovekraft Chupacabra ($110 used :()and I'm floored at how good it sounds. AFAIK it's a MO'D clone. Mine has asymmetrical and symmetrical clipping, and a boost mode. I wonder if that's the same as LED clipping. In LED mode is it really loud and less gainy?

I think it was probably just luck.

I am wondering if this has the MO'D options. I know it has symmetrical and asymmetrical clipping modes + an led clipping mode. I've eyed the Chupacabra too over the last year or so. I finally bought the Retrosonic because of the price and having a rat sounds like fun.

I've got a Turbo Rat that's been modded for asymmetrical clipping, and it just kills at what it does. Plus it likes them high-gain inputs, so things like my POG don't fizz it out like my other pedals...

someone was just telling me about this.
i love my big box rat and have had it for many years, as well as a few small box rats too.

every distortion box should have a 'filter' (hi cut) control. it makes the rat one of the most versatile and usable distortions with almost any guitar/amp combination.
definitely my 'deserted-island' pedal without a doubt.

can you post a pic?

i've got a busted one that i want to fix/mod. what other kind of mods are there for them?

Oh and don’t forget the no clipping mod.
More gain, volume and smoother distortion.
If you do the asymmetrical/LED mod use a 3 way switch, on/off/on, or 4 position rotary foe symmetrical, asymmetrical, LED and one. That takes up more room though..

You can also play with the I/O caps and filter caps to give it a lot more bass.

Have you A/B'd the Chupacabra against a Rat? I've been jonesin for another Rat, and I saw a Chupacabra up for sale for a little more than what an older Rat would be.
