New DIY PCB range (VIPfx)

Post by soldersqueeze »

Nothing to do with me, but these boards are getting a good response at the madbean forums, and there are some really interesting projects. Ordered a few so I'll report back here if anyone's interested-

I have no idea if he is selling PCB's or populated PCB's like the picture. there is no contact info or company name except maybe "gprause". if these are populated boards, this a really good price. if these are not populated they are still a decent price. how does bean respond to people competing with him on his own forum?

They're not populated, that would be a fair bit more money! You're right about the lack of info, I think it's just a sales page he links to from madbean/ freestompboxes. You can contact him on either forum as "chi_boy".
Madbean seems to be hugely supportive of anyone putting out projects- he hosts both JMK and 1776 effects forums and loads of people make and sell short runs of boards through his pages. And at the end of the day, there's no one out there who can seriously compete with his range and quality anyway :idk:

That sales page is linked through a thread that George has in the Buy/Sell/Trade area at the Madbean forum. He's cool; my problem is I can't decide which of his projects to try out! Lots of ODs; the ROG Tri-Vibe may be the most tempting.

I snagged the professor tweed!
Which will be my first pedal that isn't a kit.
Ordering parts is going to be a bitch

His layouts are so clean, I still haven't grabbed any but I feel like I wanna build them all!

Is he licensed by runoffgroove or anything? I always thought you had to ask permission or some sorts to sell their designs in any way.

His layouts are clean from an aesthetic perspective, some of the things I would change, personally for lower noise, but they look nice.

I've seen him post these in a few DIY forums and I've not seen any pitchforks yet, so I'm guessing he's cleared. I think the ROG licensing statement refers to "builders who wish to sell pedals based on, in whole or in part, our projects". Maybe they don't count PCBs as pedals? It seems to align with their DIY philosophy.
All I can say for certain is that my boards arrived and they seem excellent quality. Hopefully I'm not complicit in intellectual copyright theft from anyone but Brian Wampler ;)

So, if we buy those PCBs, we will have to assemble it by ourselves? Will they be able to assemble it? How much would it cost? The PCBs seem quite cheap, some seem to have been discontinued on their website. Since these boards are using through-hole parts, assembling would not be a big problem I guess. It would take few hours to complete the assembly for me. Who makes those PCBs by the way? They must have been fabricated in a large scale I guess.

You will have to source and build yourself, he's only selling blank fabricated PCBs. Can't speak on what company he goes through for fabrication. If you needed help with assembly or someone to do it I can assist you.
