Which Rat?

Post by Acefire45 »

Hey guys, I'm sure this question has been raised in the depths of some thread, but I searched and couldn't find anything. I am heavily thinking about getting a Turbo RAT, some tried I tried a turbo rat belonging to the guitarist in my old band and I thought it sounded great. The only question I have before the I pull the trigger on one, is how does the White Face RAT reissue, RAT2, Turbo RAT, You Dirty Rat, and the SOLO differ in sound? (Also, I'm not interested in anything vintage, I'm trying to stay on the more cost efficient end of things.) I know its a broad question, but hopefully I can get some good opinions and feedback. Thanks guys!

It's really all about the clipping diodes and the 308 chip. You really could just get away with getting a cheap RAT2, swapping out the diodes on the board for a 3 way switch, and adding LED's and stock silicon on that switch to go between stock RAT, Turbo Rat, and no diodes which is more of dirty boost

Rat Tail def looks badass.

Iron Pig and the newer Acid Pig are great too if you want a buncha RATS in one box. Well, I'm assuming the Acid Pig is great, basically slimmed down Iron Pig (which I own) and that thing totally rules.

I got Rat Tail #1 recently and with the clipping options split into high and low along with the switch it really opens it up and makes it super useful... Stacks well with anything...

Yep. RT is definitely the way to go.

I had never seen the rat tail before! I looked some videos up and it sounds really good. But its also 60$ more than the Turbo Rat, is it really worth it? Or can the Turbo Rat do the same type of sounds?

Mind you, all Rats will have the same type of sounds, that's kind of the point. What the Rat Tail and Iron/Acid Pig offer are modifications on that sound, giving you the flexibility to enhance the type of sounds that you like in the pedal. Personally, I use my Rat Tail pretty extensively on both guitar and bass and I tweak my settings depending on the instrument, so that it fits what I'm looking for.

But of course, YMMV, etc.

Yes Grr is right... I've only had an old Rat and the RI and much prefer the options that the extra $$$ gets you on the RT... The high and low knobs really let you tune it to your set-up and it is great with Guitar, Bass or Baritones...

Buy a used turbo rat for cheap and then use the extra money to get it modded with a bunch of stuff it's generally cheaper since you can find new turn rats for 50 bucks or less pretty often

I like the 90's reissue RAT a lot but not as much as I like my Rat Tail. RT sounds better on bass and has all the mods you want, as well as sounding excellent on guitar. Then there's the Rat King which is double the fun. I have one as well which I love but don't really have the need for it. It's a bit pricier than the other two but it does have a couple more features. And I'm not just hyping it up because I have mine for sale over in BST :hello:

I will attest to the Rat Tail ruling. I recently got rid of my second, only because my original big box Rat seems to be exactly what I want from a Rat.
