Anybody using ART Tube MP preamps?

Post by Deltaphoenix »

Do they actually help out the sound? I am looking for a DI for recording as well as mic pre. $30 or less for a used one seems alright to me. I saw the newer ones (v3) have a rotary knob for all kinds of different settings like: flat, bass, guitar, vocals, and a lot more.

OBVIOUSLY these are pretty cheap and I wouldn't expect them to be amaze-balls, but do they really make a difference? (I know they are starve-plate design, so there isn't any real TOOB magic.) Are they super noisy?

I have not used an Art Tube MP but have used a Behringer Mic Pre (which I think is similar). My two cents is save up for a more robust DI like something Radial makes or in you want a preamp with a compressor something like the Joe Meek OneQ or something similar. I wasn't impressed with the Behringer mic pre I have at all. The Art Tube consistently gets good reviews so maybe it's better.

Funny, I actually just busted one out the other day. For the price, they are worth it. I actually started using it with the input cranked for a nice overdrive.

They are worth the price but I'd save money for something with better quality.

You get what you pay for, changing tubes helps... I'd go for the one with the rotary just for more options, like Vocals through the Bass setting or Guitar through the Piano... :thumb:

Haven't used one in years but the original ones were decent cheap no coloration phantom power boxes.

And that's all I used 'em for.

I have one going right now. I didnt expect anything tremendous or revolutionary, and so I was pretty pleased when I grabbed it. it sounds nice. also I do enjoy running it into an amp and hitting it with a boost for a nice overdrive. super fun.
