Re: Low-gain, 60s-style fuzzdrive / overfuzz
Weeeellllll despite what Schnikes said, and I know he's had the BF since it came out, it seems like that one gets the closest to what I want, at least from what I've heard on the demos. Like it can almost get Rangemaster-y, that sort of nearly-wah midrange fuzz. The PGS demo does a pretty good job with that.
The Mini maybe is just a little too... clean or something. Like even when the OD is heavy, it's still pretty pristine. And I know the bias knob could probably fix that, but it also seems to get very zipper/velcro, which I already have in the US Fuzz and don't want in an overdrive.
Perhaps the Sparkle Motion would be good, but I fear it would get too bassy. For some reason.

I think I speak for everybody when I say no matter what pedal you get... you should get a mini overdrive with it.

Here's a pretty useful demo of 12 vintage fuzz circuits that might lead you towards what flavors of clone/modern variant you should pursue: http://tonefiend.com/guitar/fuzzdetective/ There's one appendix so far in the follow-up post.

That's pretty neat!
I think I found what I wanted...

for low gain, check out the Analogman version of the Sam Ash fuzz...his is called the Astro Tone.

There are a few neat ones from Analogman... I don't think I've even ever tried one of those. Peppermint Fuzz, etc.
This seems neat, but probably overkill:

Based on the "Brilliant" channel of the Vox Conqueror.

I love the Astro tone. I never use it with the gain knob past 12, it's so great for low gain DIRT, better than any other drive i have tried. The tone control can shift between fat and thin, which can be nice for these 60s riffs.
if i didn't have my late 70s/early 80s Distortion+, which works wonderfully for low/medium gain, i would have bought an Astro Tone by now. i can't really recommend the new D+; i apparently found a particularly wonderful v2 or v3 version (block logo, desireable box, no LED).

I really dig the Fuzzhugger 1134. It morphed into the Chalice and then the AB-Synth eventually, but the 1134 has a tone all its own. Tom can still build them as custom orders I think. He built me a killer 5-knob version last year. One of my faves.

Re: Low-gain, 60s-style fuzzdrive / overfuzz
it's difficult to define, but let me try. it's fatter and harmonically richer than the newer ones, more like the big round sound of Jerry Garcia's in the late 70s than the thin, slightly reedy quality of Bob Mould's D+ or the less-than-pleasant sound of the reissue one in the PGS video demo. i think the transistors were kissed by an angel or something. when i went out looking for distortion boxes in a buy/sell in the early 80s it slew everything else in the store. and i got it for $25 or $30.

I feel like the Skychord Truck Loud could cop the tones you're looking for. Such a unique sounding fuzz/overdrive pedal.
