Ditch a fuzz for an OD?

Re: Ditch a fuzz for an OD?
If you can mod stuff, probably best to get a Boss SD-1 as it has the most options available to it, and sounds great stock too(like a ballsier T00b screamer).

Just sold my Ronsound, but have another clone by Jim Roth from Built to Spill that's not leaving my board...ever. Great sound.1,2,3, Pull Out! wrote:I love making huge loud destructive noises with fuzz as much as anyone else on this forum, but sometimes it's just not practical, I use overdrive just as much, maybe even more than i use fuzz.
Sounds tasty, I'll check it out

Anyhow, why not an EHX OD? At least they won't break the bank.
I have a guitar, but I liked the Bass BMP when I tried it out. The EHX OD seemed really good for the price, but I'm not sure how much treble and mids will get through since I want to be able to run it with the Clari(not), Bass BMP, and Superdelay.
People do love the KP around here, and the Electric Brown sounded pretty good to my ears, but it's not what I'm looking for. The KP was one of my first choices to get for a nice OD, but I just listened to the Fairfield Circutry Barbershop and it's a really nice low-gain overdrive. Catalinbread's SCOD sounds pretty killer too. Ugh, I guess I'll have to wait awhile on getting an OD and just try pushing the tubes of my Blues Jr. (that is when noone is in the dorm).
Do you like listening to homemade music? Me too. Why don't you try one of mine?

The EHX germanium od is pretty much a clean boost unless you want dying battery tones. Might do the job if you have a tube amp.
Youtube Channel?

Another best of both worlds if you are interested in modding (or have someone do it for you) is to take a big box muff (nyc or russian or whatever)
and use a 3pdt that lifts the 470pF caps (a la Tone Wicker) as well as the clipping diodes in the first three transistor stages (clipping diodes only present in stages 2 and 3). i call this mode 'Clipping Wicker' haha but it gets way way louder and does overdrive tones instead of jsut straight fuzz.

Re: Ditch a fuzz for an OD?
I have a Timmy clone and it's amazing. I know there's a lot of hype behind this pedal, but I believe that it's for a reason. It's a light/medium od, and it's crystal clear. I believe it might do a bit of witchcraft to your tone. Good stuff. I would NOT buy one used though, since they are super overpriced due to the waiting list. But if you have the patience to be on a list of that nature, it will only cost you $130. If you didn't like it you could always resell it for a HUGE profit over at TGP.
At the same price range, but a bit higher gain, I would check out the MI Audio Crunchbox.

I haven't played one personally... yet! I have one that should be on its way to me soon. Once again, if you're patient you can find a great deal. I just bought mine for $70 shipped.
Those are my two pennies.

if you like the timmy there's always danelectro's cool cat transparent overdrive, which is a pretty good clone at a much lower price.

I won't support Dano's mass produced clones. Plus I think I'm gonna go with the Catalinbread Silver Kiss Mk2. Sounded better than the Timmy to my ears, though it's not meant to be ultra transparent. The EQ is much more workable too. Probably gonna get another pedal before that though...

I had my sights set on a Silverkiss a while ago...until I decided I needed a Rat and another fuzz

I really liked my friend's cheapo Rat on the lower settings. Really cut through on the treble (you can hear it on the song in my sig
).

The Silverkiss seems like a pretty solid choice. I think I'm just a fan of Marshall voiced od's... perhaps I need to buy a marshall.

I nearly bought a Silverkiss, but ended up buying a Teaser Stallion AE instead. I really like the Catalinbread American Edition version of their pedals.

Re: Ditch a fuzz for an OD?
The Silver Kiss Trinity (US Edition) is really clear sounding (according to the GMD demo). Having the ability to do both EQ and Compression if I want is awesome, plus it's still less than $200. They aren't listed on the Catalinbread site though...
(BTW, if you listen to my song you can hear me playing through a Marshall JCM2000 DSL. AWESOME FREAKING AMP)

Re: Ditch a fuzz for an OD?
I think the American Editions were only limited run. They pop rather often on a lot of the gear forums.
I've tossed around the idea of getting a Bluesbreaker or a JCM 800 2204. But I think the next amp I'll get is a Twin Reverb. They seem to take effects with a smile.

Re: Ditch a fuzz for an OD?
JCM 800s are amazing amps. I still want to get a JCM2000 though since they're cheaper and sound pretty good as well.
Also, I think that there's a place online that has a Silver Kiss Trinity in stock, so I'm gonna hold out to get it until after my next pedal purchase.

Re: Ditch a fuzz for an OD?
You might go with a fuzzy overdrive like the Interstellar Overdriver, Textosterone, Mule, or a Red Llama clone.
