Since no one else said it, may I suggest a Boss ODB-3? I've never played with a Rat, but the ODB-3 is a good starter pedal, I think. And you can get them (used) for cheap

I realize where we are.
That in mind, the answer is a delay over fuzz.
Either a CC or 616.
Fun by itself and extra fun with other stuff.

There is a dr. S elements in the BST for 160. Great deal from a cool cat, I would buy it if I had the scratch.

Wow a lot of RAT suggestions. I had no idea bassists liked them! I'm definitely putting that on the list. Oh, punkd and metal aside, Talking Heads is her favorite band, but I don't think that their bassist really used effects all that much, unless you count grooving like a motherfucker as an effect.
Also, there will be no pictures of my babely girlfriend. That's like leaving your four-year-old in an international airport.

“When it comes to effects, I go through periods of change,” Weymouth admits. “Right now I’m using just a little MXR Flanger; it gives me a bit of extra sustain and chorusing. I think effects are great in the studio–I say, ‘Go for it!’ But onstage, you must simplify. Everything breaks in the live situation; it’s amazing. My mother calls it la malaise des choses–the malaise of things.
