What is Velcro fuzz, and is it possible on single coils?
Hey all, I was wondering what it is about a fuzz circuit that makes it Velcro, with that sputtery, unstable gated sound? Is it a gate with an oscillating threshold or something?
Also, have any of you have successfully gotten a nice, smoothly-oscillating Velcro fuzz with single coils. What pedals did you use for it? I'm demoing out an EQD Dirt Transmitter, but it just didn't sound good or consistent. Same with a Blackout Blunderbuss (18V with the preamp knob down), Fairfield Unpleasant Surprise, Zvex Fuzz Factory... I figure the Dirt Transmitter should immediately be able to give me that sound, but I couldn't get it at all. Then I switched in a guitar with humbuckers, and my ears were immediately greeted with that beautiful violence. Whereas a single coil would sustain clearly for a while and only sputter for a second when decaying, the humbucker almost seemed like it had a randomized tremolo on it, so the sputtery sound lasted the whole length of a note.
Why is this? Does it have to do with the higher output of humbuckers and how the sputtery sound is implemented electronically?

just go to the Fuzzhugger subforum and check out the Velcrobot
if that does not give you what your looking for then I am not sure what will.

That Velcrobot is awesome. I like the effect with the gate knob down, just as with the bias down on the Dirt Transmitter. I have to try one of these out!

You must tell me how!
Also, am I calling this the wrong thing? Velcro or gated? I like that sputtering sound, but I don't like the loss of sustain.

My algal bloom can get a slightly velcro-y feel sometimes with the starve all the way down. Moreso when combined with another gain pedal with a starve or bias knob. But it's more of a feel than a real

The best two I have here are the Mellowtone Wolf Computer and Mooer FOG, the Devi Ever Bit was quite good for that type of sound too, in my opinion.
good deals with: the_brow, phantasmagorovich, alexsga, DarkAxel, goroth, The Wood Wizard, Tendollarcat, vbps, monkeydancer, intothegroove, Brobee

Velcro/bitcrush type fuzz is my favourite and I don't know how much longer I can hold out for a velcrobot! That pedal is by far the best velcro fuzz I've heard, Tom is a genius!

devi ever bit was good. I have to say though, I really really like the fuzz factory for this.
Oh but maybe, check out Shoe Pedals,
Maybe the Silver Apple Fuzz

Sure, this one seems to fit it just right, starting at 0:22 in:

Like I said, though, I just can't get that sound with single coils, and I'm demoing that pedal right now and keeping it on the same exact settings. I can't hold out a note and have it sputter its whole length like it does with humbuckers.

One assumes you should be able to use a boost behind it to bring the output level up.
Perhaps an always-on boost that makes your tone sound bigger, more three-dimensional.
A boost that will make you kick yourself for not buying it sooner.
A boost that will put a Dumble in your Ferrari.
You need a Klon.

I just picked up a Solidgoldfx Nitro that I really love. I'll try that when I get home.
Just another example of a good one I was thinking, by the way, is the Blackout Fix'd Fuzz. I couldn't get that to sound right when I had it.

Old video is grainey lol. But yes, I would call it a velco type fuzz. So is the Pixel, really, but has a different deign/set of cotnrols/manner of operating.
Anyway, what makes that sound, since you asked, is when you havea fuzz that has the ability to start self-oscillating but you also can control the bias settings on one of the transistors so that it's typically, just on the edge of oscillating. When you play a note, that takes over, as the note dies out the oscillation starts to take over, resulting in that zipping sound, and when the input signal gets low enough it will start to pinch off, resulting in the sputtery ending.
One of my favorite effects and almost borders on not really being a fuzz anymore. Something else.
