My gf is getting her first pedal

She's a beginner bassist and wants to get a pedal to mess around with. I play bass but I'm more familiar with effects as applicable to guitar. She needs something inexpensive and fun and she likes metal and punk, so I thought a dirt pedal would be best; my immediate thought was a Big Muff. I remembered that there's a Bass Big Muff though; is that preferable to bassists? What would be a good, affordable dirt pedal for a novice bassist to get?

I know this is some basic shit but as people who love fuzz I thought it would be best to seek your counsel.

There's a lot of hate on the Bass Big Muff but it's stupid cheap and easy to come by and could be a stepping stone until she finds something she likes... Check craigslist cause there are always Bass pedals there... Some Boss OD or DS might work for cheap also...

First pedal has to be a fun pedal! a bass big muff is not, it is made for people that want a conservative fuzz so they don't have to learn how to actually get a good sound or they don't want something that really changes their sound much, ANY "normal" big muff or clone is a better choice because they are more fun and sound better.

The basic Rat you can get at guitar center is pretty neat though you'll lose a bit of your very low end.

back when I used to play bass in a band my Rat was my best friend. Absolutely loved it. I miss that Rat almost as much as I miss playing in bands...

The basic Rat you can get at guitar center is pretty neat though you'll lose a bit of your very low end.

So then she will have to get a EQ pedal or a lowpass filter and then a compressor and at that point you might as well get a phaser because they are cool and wellll she might want more then one dirty sound and then.... she turns into us

If she wants just a little bit of dirt and not a lot, the HardWire CM-2 is cheap used and sounds real good on bass.
