What effects/circuits are you tired of?

Post by Jero »

Are there any specific circuits, or types of effects, that you think are overdone or can't be improved upon? There are those that just about every company makes one of; Muffs, tone benders, fuzz faces, superfuzz, etc...but are any of them getting too repetitive?

Alternatively, what would you like to see more of?

I'm not into Muff type of fuzz.

What the world desperately needs are more transparent overdrives.

There is only so much that will sound good on a guitar or bass... I think in 60+ years of effecting we've found most of it... Everybody here wants to go all Klaus Jarre so maybe you should explore the synth/filter route...

Muffs, tubescreamers and fuzz faces.

Why aren't there more Ampeg Scramblers and mutron based stuff that isn't DIY?

^ Agreed.

I love a wide array of muff and FF variants but I can't imagine them getting much better. Probably get a custom BAT IC muff soon as I don't have an IC option currently but I'll be done after that.

The Tube Screamer is def overdone and underwhelming in my experience. That's probably the only circuit I actively avoid.

to be tired of something i have to have dug it in the first place. i've never liked the FF for what i do, the only Muff i've ever gotten on with is the W&C Tall Font Russian, and i hate Tube Screamers with the white-hot intensity of a thousand suns.

things i'm sick of:

oscillating fuzz.
delay with modulation or additional processing on the repeats...i've got processors for that.
compressors without enough controls to really make them useable. attack and release, PLEASE.
modulation using chip-generated whole-tone arpeggios as "magic" fairy dust. stop with the unicorn-crapping-rainbows sound already.
600ms analog delays that go for $350.
and fucking shimmer reverb must die. NOW.

TS9 stuff
Chorus
Bit Crusher

regarding the FF, that one grows on me. I think i'm really a FF guy. And there are so many great varieties (Dunlop Bonamassa/Johnson, SS/BS Hawk, WolfCPU, Pigdog 1.5, Ghost MindRocker). I thought about a year ago, that this one will get boring soon but the other way round happend: still really enjoying every flavour and diggin the hell out of them...

Fuck fuzz :p

But seriously, I'd like to see more interesting filter effects. Kill Kill Filter and the couple modes on the Mobius are/seem awesome.
There are probably more out there then I'm aware of, but yeah.

*goes and does research*

^Agreed!

And like dubkitty said, I'd rather hear something really different with a delay other than it does "modulation"
I think delays like the pitch pirate, particle and even the SMMH tackle unique sounds that should be prodded further.

I think it's tough for builders to find new angles that are musical and useful all of the time. That said, its massively disappointing to me when a new pedal release from a builder i like is a chorus, generic octaver or a digital standard delay. Fucking chorus in particular.

Ross Compressor.

Want to see a decent clone (tough due to chip scarcity) or legit "new & improved" redesign of the Boss VB-2.

Muffs, generic overdrives and basically everything really generic :idk:

but also... builders hardly tapping into envelope controlled stuff...I mean Wampler FTE has a modulation controlled via the strength of your picking... why are not there more envelope controlled stuff? I want envelope controlled vibrato/pitch shifter, I want envelope controlled flanger AND i want those things and an envelope filter with controllable attack time

I simply have some sounds in my head I can't find in a pedal... and please don'T quote me posting some fucking pixiedust obscure builder who built two envelope controlled everythings and used his blood to mix it with the lacquer and then disappeared forever

i don't know, kind of a train of thoughts rant... but... yeah
