Bass Players - advice RE preamps...

Post by JohnnyC »

Bass players…I need suggestions on a CHEAP pre amp pedal(ie I want to spend as little as possible as im primarily a guitar player…who occasionally wants to attempt to make bass sounds at home for testing pedals/recording)

The simplier the better…as the signal chain will go bass –> bass pre pedal  fx return of a Genz Benz El Diablo 100 Guitar head into bass 4x10 cab (or DI)

Ive used the MXR Bass DI+ and various sansamp in the past but I think they will be too feature packed.
Other things im looking at are the zoom B series or the new multistomp.

Any other suggestions?

I find pre-amps for me at least not doing much other than taking up room. I would just straight DI or use a compressor.

how cheap is cheap?

Everyone wants to tell you to snag a Rusty Box, but they're afraid too because you might look at us all askance.

I'd stay away from the zoom stuff, if only because their late 90's stuff left such a bad taste in my mouth I can't go back.
good deals are here.

I've had my MXR DI+ longer than anything else, it's just a good, basic DI. I pretty well just ignore the distortion side of things, it's pretty crappy. I only use it as a 3 band EQ and a volume knob really.

If you keep an eye on TalkBass, you can sometimes snag them for as low as $80.
