i know the answer, but i'm not going to tell you. i'm sort of an analog purist when it comes to finger snaps.

... but :erm: finger snaps come from digits. So, that makes them, by their very nature, digital. :whoa:

I don't want just like straight sample sounding stuff, I want it to have that drum machine-esque quality

I could just play an actual drum kit or snap my actual fingers

Whether you can edit them or not, most drum machines that do those sounds are sample-based anyway, like the R8.

Do you want to synthesize your own sounds? A reasonable snap could be made by pitching up, and shortening a handclap. I'd simulate brushes by adding filtered noise with a slower attack to the snare and cymbals. I've never owned a machine with those capabilities, but maybe look at an Electribe, Machinedrum, or something by Jomox.

This^

Also, most drum kits pre '85, and a lot after then too, are analog (no sampling necessary). White noise generators and sine wave oscillators are behind a lot of those sounds.

If you can't find anything you might try using a slow gear clone, set super fast, and white noise in bursts (an lfo-modulated white noise generator, or even just an old cheapo Casio drum machine could get you there). In my head that sounds like a drum machine version of brushes. You could try running an envelope filter after the slow gear to see if that gets closer. I have no idea how you'd do finger snaps, though....

Most medium quality machines will have a jazz kit. The dr,. Rhythm series is surprisingly useful to snag samples from.

One of my favorite things to do is use an esx-1 to sample other machines, and then use it's effects or outboard effects to modify them.
Got my A machines on the table, got my B machines in a drawer.
