Boss VB-2 Vibrato Clones

Post by bowdown2bauhaus »

Hey dudes,

Been interested in Boss Vibrato units made in the 90s. Nels Cline has one. They've been selling on Ebay and Flakeslist for $400 or more. Has there been a good clone made of it yet, or something that comes close? I've read the Behringer UV-300 is a replica but that it's too noisy and flimsy.

There's some risk you'll get a noisy one, but those plastic enclosures are actually pretty sturdy. Worth a shot for the $24 you'll be out IMO.

the behringer is really close. Had both side by side. There's a few rehouse tutorials online.
Got my A machines on the table, got my B machines in a drawer.

The micro sized one I seem to recall is a phaser (Small Stone-based?) with the clean path lifted.

The BYOC is supposed to be a VB-2 clone, but I'm guessing with true bypass instead of the buffered switching: http://buildyourownclone.com/effects-pe ... brato.html

The BBE Mind Bender is supposed to cop VB-2-ish vibe in vibrato mode but I dunno how close it is.

Think it's actually Chorus, Small Clone with the dry lifted so delay modulation as opposed to pitch of the Stone.

Which, the VB-2 also happens to be, pretty standard modulation topology. I would imagine the new Dr.Scientist Cosmichorus can get pretty damn close to it and they both share a 'rise' feature.

I had a VB-2 for a little while, and I'd say the Cosmichorus is the closest i could get to it out of those I've played. I have the V2 but I'd imagine the V3 would be even better.
If you really want 'that' sound and it's something you'd actually use a lot I would say try and actually get a VB-2 though, it's a phenomenal pedal.

Never owned a VB-2 but if you've got a link to a VB-2 sound you like I can try and dial in my V3 Cosmichorus as close as I can and put up a recording of it.

The Diamond Vibrato is also a really sweet, sickly vibrato pedal. It's not as 'vintage' as the Malekko I had, which had a tame top-end and a more subtle lo-fi approach. The Cosmichorus V2 I had was super sickly and syrupy. The Diamond is a perfect blend of the two. Too big and expensive though for what it is. I would totally buy one if they condensed it into a smaller box and dropped the price a little.

Yeah, I've been interested in the Diamond, but not enough to plunk down that chunk of change on it.
