Boss RV2 Plate vs. Boss RV5 Plate...Differences?

Post by onyxrhino »

So, I've got a Boss RV2 that I like to use for plate reverbs. I like the sound of it, but I don't use it that often and I don't really use any of the other sounds on it. I was thinking about getting an RV5 for modulated reverb. How much does the plate on the RV5 sound like the RV2? Would it be able to replace the RV2? What do you think?

I've owned both (though not at the same time.) They're definitely different. It may be suitable for your needs, but don't count it a sure thing.

I first got the RV-5 because I wanted to recreate the plate verb sounds from the RV-3, but found the RV-5 much too "clean" and "smooth" as compared to the RV-3.
:joy: things to do, things to re-do :omg:

What about looking into something like the Line 6 Verbzilla or TC Hall of Fame? With those, you could hear many different types of reverb and figure out what you really like, then buy something dedicated to that.

Thanks! I'll check it out.

...as for the other reverb suggestions people are offering, I was maybe unclear. I'm not looking for a different plate sound. I was looking to see if I could find something that did the same plate sound. I've got a Verbzilla. It's cool for lots of stuff, but the plate is nothing like the RV2. It's weird, I've gone through a ton of reverbs, and I haven't heard another plate that matches up much with the RV2. The Verbzilla's plate is sounds a bit too atmospheric, distant. Others, like the Digiverb, are too trebly (especially with distortion).

The thing is, no pedal is going to give you the exact same plate sound. Since you don't use it that often and don't like the other sounds, I thought that even though you wouldn't be able to get the exact same plate, a more versatile reverb might serve you better.
