ok so I think I was getting a little over ambitious with the diy synth idea
what about a nice little drum machine?
any way to get a fatter sound? every drum machine I've heard sounds so thin

Re: analog drum machine?
IMO just about all drum machines sound thin unless you're running them through a board, outboard pres/effects and/or pedals.
IDK about kits, but some inexpensive, analogue drum machines (non sample-based) that commonly turn up are the Roland DR-55 & DR-110 and Oberheim DX.
For a little bit more you can score a TR-606 and DMX...but both still fall under "affordable".
Then there are the legendary 808 and 909 units......but I doubt you're looking to spend 2k or more, apiece

Re: analog drum machine?
yeah the 808 is pretty much exactly what I'm lookin for hah. Nice full bass, the snare is still kind of wimpy but I mean that's a drum machine for ya
but yeah I'm not really lookin to spend 2 grand
edit: AHHHH modular 808 parts
http://www.acidlab.de/
about $130 for the 808 bass drum? YES PLEASE
are there schematics for the 808? how hard would it be to build the bass/snare parts?

Re: analog drum machine?
there are actually many manufacturers making euro modules for cr78 tr808 tr909 etc.. the 808 kick is one of those things that was born fat. it comes to the party with a 30 rack and a mullet. don't need no pedals to have a good time.
on the DIY side, try http://cv.hexinverter.net/?page=projects and the PCB store http://hexinverter.net/

Re: analog drum machine?
peep the MFB stuff, if you're looking for small affordable analog drum machines
http://www.mfberlin.de/
there full on self contained drum machines have the same circuits as their modular rack stuff.

Re: analog drum machine?
How about a mechanical machine with real drums?
Cool band out of NC is doing this:

No affiliation. Now every time I hear "drum machine" I think of their rhythm 1001 setup though.

The 9090 drum synthesizer: http://www.9090project.co.uk/
It's definitely an ambitious project, though.
