the seymour duncan factory

Post by misterstomach »

one of my band mates is originally from santa barbara and worked at seymour duncan for years. so last month when we were on tour we got to swing by the factory and get a little tour and meet some folks. when we walked in the door the folks working there all knew my band mate and were all excited to see us and show us around. we got the tour from seymour's son. the place is way smaller than i would have expected, especially considering that everything they make is made in that facility. it was cool to see how it all goes together and watch them winding the pickups and all. they even have the old pickup winder from the original gibson plant in kalamazoo. they use it to wind the PAF's and vintage style humbuckers. the custom shop was awesome and was in one room that's smaller than my bedroom. they're also developing a new line of pedals that will be made in the same facility. all in all, i was pretty impressed with how small the whole operation really is and walked away with a pretty good feeling about them. i always think of them as the big giant of aftermarket pickups, which they are, but it was cool to see that it still operates like a fairly small family business. sorry i don't have pictures or a wealth of technical info, which would make the thread a lot cooler, but i just thought i'd throw it out there. it was cool to see.

I'm gonna imagine that what you saw is like the Hershey Factory Tour and the real factory is a dark hive of industry where robots and conveyors shuttle pickups down to an army of hunched-over human packers...

But seriously, I've always imagined that their facility and output (pun not intended) must be huge!

I worked at a small ball-bearing factory one summer in college, and I've seen what a surprising output a small, well-oiled staff can have. (Small, well oiled staff.) It opened my eyes to how things are made.

Pics would've definitely kept this thread out of penis-pun territory.

There's this, but it's edited a bit:
