Way Huge Ring Worm

Post by friendship »

I'm a fan of ring modulation, and I'm interested in this pedal. However, I've heard that it has a very loud carrier frequency that oscillates even when you're not playing. I hope that's not true or at least not totally bothersome, because it's the only ring mod I'm aware of with both an expression pedal out (vital), and a variety of LFO patterns. Does anyone have experience with it, and if so, what can you tell me about it?

Balllllls. It's like the ideal ring mod otherwise.

Doesn't the Ring Thing fit the requirements: expression control and different waveforms? Moog MF-102 has 2 wave patterns, as does the Fairfield Randy's Revenge and both have plenty of options for expression control.

Alternatively, for a bunch more money the Quadrature engine in the Strymon Mobius can do just about any kind of FM and AM you would want.

+1 I bought one of these when they came out because it was certainly interesting. Alas, the carrier bleed was just too much, and I sold it on here to ech0, who lives in Slovenia.

I've always wanted to try out the EHX Ring Thing. You could also look at any of the Copilot ring mods along with the Broadcast for wave forms: http://www.copilotfx.com/broadcast.html. I tried the Planet before if I remember correctly it has a gate so that there isn't a carrier bleed. I know he's made a couple of custom boxes with the Broadcast and the Planet together.

You know, I hadn't really considered the Ring Thing. I don't really need all the pitchshifting/whammy effects, but on the other hand, it would let me sell off my PS-5, since it can do many of the same things it can do. How is the ring modulation on it? So many demos I'm hearing focus on the pitchshifting and tonal effects, but I'm more interested in what it can do with dissonance and noise.

Also, the Mobius, Moog, and Fairfield seem wonderful, but those are well out of my price range.

The Copilot FX Planetoid is pretty cool and maybe the Antenna or Antenna 2 is interesting for you as well.
Other than that there's also the Heavy Electronics Saturn and the Dwarfcraft Devices Hax.

I find the RT surprisingly good. It's not as warm as some others (the filter on the Fairfield really shines for that) but it does dissonance and noise no problem.

thanks guys, i think i'll check the ring thing out. sounds like it could do all the things i need. at first i was grumpy about it not having as many waveforms as the Ring Worm, but then I read that it has an oscillator input. That's exciting. i'm gonna save my pennies for one.

If you still want to try out a Ringworm, I'm selling one.

Let me know, you may like it.

I'm only selling mine cause I'm switching to a digital multi fx unit.
