fuzz for overdrive

Post by Casavettes »

so does anybody use a fuzz pedal as their "overdrive" sound?

been putting a lot of thought, probably too much thought
into overdrive pedals and which ones i like
and it always seems that i pick one up, really enjoy it for awhile but eventually grow tired and want something else. seems like a continuous annoying cycle and i'm wondering if i just don't like overdrive pedals as much as i thunk i did.
when it comes down to it, i think i prefer the breakup/overdrive coming straight from the amp, and then pummeling/pushing it with a fuzz.

i have the blunderbuss and tafm on my board now and i'm messing with the buss at lower gain and the tafm at peels the paint off walls setting.

Yeah! Before I had the mini I used an Algal Bloom as an overdrive full time and I think it sounds great, still do it sometimes anyway because it's different to an actual overdrive. I use my LSTR with the gain fairly low as a dark fuzzy overdrive a lot too, it's really cool having that and then boosting it for serious fuzz.

only ones i've really tried was the micro amp and a diamond boost
i mostly used the mxr to sit behind my overdrive to add more gain

i love my mini stacked into a blunderbuss as well.
but after listening back from certain live shows, i guess i'm trying to evaluate my sound and what i'm actually going for.
it's kind of like you get a certain tone with a fuzz or some kind of dirt(maybe anything for that matter) and by yourself you sound like tits
but within a group context it just doesn't compliment everything else going on... it shits on the other instruments.
so i'm trying to fill in the cracks where my guitar belongs.
it's fun messing around with all the pedals, but its gets to a point where i can lose track of the actual sound coming from my amp...
i hope this makes sense.

The Earthbound Supercollider has a very amp-ish low gain tone. I use it all the time as an OD stand-in. :joy:

Fuck! I agree with everything in this whole thread!! Like my feelings exactly. Except I've never played a supe collider or a blunderbuss. But I too have been using an algal as an overdrive! I really like it that way! I could maybe get some clips if you're interested :thumb:

totes dude! I can prolly hook ya up over the next few days.

The overdrive that I've settled on for the longest is pretty similar to this.

I asked if he could make anymore and he said he makes something nearly identical save for the mystery parts mentioned in the video for people who ask the same thing. It's a nice overdrive and stacks awesomely with amp od. I find it fairly dark even with the tone knob off. But i've been digging the algal more mostly because it's more reactive to the guitars tone controls and plenty more versatile. A different beast though.

I had something actually relevant I was gonna say but its lost now :snax:

Also! That foot fetish pedal was only $125 for the pedal, shipping, and whatever art I wanted on it NICE

Demo Tape Fuzz is the best.

Yes, I've used fuzz as overdrive.

The Os Mutantes fuzz circuit cleans up well enough to use like an overdrive. The Basic Audio Wildcat sounds kinda overdrivey with the fuzz knob turned all the way down.

The DOD 250/Distortion+ circuit is also a sound I like stacking fuzz with.

I actually prefer fuzz into clean boost though.

Yerp!

The Pharaoh, Supercollider, Centurion, W&C Tall Font and Demo Tape Fuzz are all great a lower gains.
You could also try some passive clipping at the front of the chain. That's where I use the Mountainking P.O. Box.
The passive clipping thing is SUPER EASY to DIY too!

I love using fuzz as overdrive in lower gain settings. Or vice versa, overdrive pedals that get "fuzzy" at higher gain settings. My Pigtronix Aria got pretty fuzzy when cranked and I loved that pedal. Also like using a muff circuit sometimes as always on dirt at times. And the blown setting on the fuck overdrive I would say is more fuzz than not, which I also use a lot. For a short while I used a Tube Sound Fuzz that I built and that sounded great out of some amps, as well.

I don't think I have much of a hard time cutting through with those besides a little with a muff (depending which type/variant) and a little with the blown setting of the Fuck. I think it's mainly due to the lack of upper mids that cut through in a live setting. Luckily for me I play out of two amps so I usually cut through either way. Everything just sounds bigger and thicker that way. But I can assume its different with two guitarists. Good luck.
