Seriously Special Twosome (Fix'd Fuzz DLX + Blunderbuss) is mighty versatile.

I'm gonna go a little left-field on this one and say Dwarfcraft Hair of the Dog. It can do full-on fuzz, it can do lower gain overdrivey fuzz, it can do tight gated fuzz, it can do that clean blendy just-some-sizzle-on-top thing. I love it.

The Algal Bloom is where it's at for me; nice overdrive, spitty gated sounding stuff and wide open full on fuzz.

It an awesome thick fuzz but I didn't get a lot of versatility out of it.

the basic audio scarab deluxe is another one to consider, bass (thicken) and treble, wide fuzz range, and bias control that goes forward and back, in out out, up or down, however you describe it
