The "How'd they get that tone?" thread?

i'm relatively new to electric instruments and am wondering how i can get my bass to sound warm, low and very, very soft. Something like Neutral Milk Hotel.

This is more like "What's that synth?" than "How'd they get that tone?" but oh well.

Go to about 3:40ish and tell me how that tone was achieved. Just insane.

I think it might be the way they recorded it (probably direct input from amp or direct to box). It just seems like there might be a touch of overdrive, but not much else, IMO. Using an EQ would be your best bet though.

Echo, tremelo, and/or staccato playing through a slowly sweeping wah, into overdrive.

There are a few shots of the pedalboards there, Sune rose Wagner appears to be using a RAT, Boss Mega Distortion, Jimi Hendrix octave Fuzz, Sharin's using a couple of RAT pedals, a ZVex Fuzz Factory, from what i can make out (and some stuff that's been taped over)

Yeah, his live tone is much different though. In the studio there's a lot of different fuzzes they use.

i have a RAT, and know that i think about it, with a bit of fiddling with the filter control you could probably cop that.

I have a very similar board (I run a TS 9>Rat>Sobbat DB1>FF>RV 7) and every once in a while try to cop something like that. It never works...

On a related note, who's making the most noise? The Fuzz Factory or Mega Distortion? (go to like 2:00)?
