This is how I feel. If you can't play it ona coustic or a lightly overdriven amp, its probably not music. That to no disrespect of swirling textures of fun-ness, I just don't consider it music, I consider it more audio therapy.

What about Synth stuff then? Changes in tone can be as effective as changes in pitch at times.

This track I did is a good example.

http://www.box.net/shared/i5idjb1fob

It just wouldn't be the same without the filter effects.

I can't imagine that being anywhere near as effective on an acoustic or through a Strat into a Fender Twin(though I do use that kind of sound half way through as an ironic comparison). If you listen to more electronic music, I guess, you'll understand a bit better what I mean. It's hard to consider it just audio therapy/ambient stuff. One good example of what electronic music does is it has a phaser effect on one note that has a "square wave tremolo" effect going on, the effect is like you get different "Notes" of the phaser.

Not quite acoustic... but............ not as much effects-laden.

Rose; you just put up an example that in my opinion agrees with PP and my statements.
It would work without effects, and if played on a pump organ (acoustic keys).
Yes it would sound different.
I never said that the music would sound better or even be as effective without effects, just that it should be able stand.

I'm not so sure I agree with you on this one, MM. I don't look at effects as icing. Effects ARE the cake for me. The melody is the icing. Effects have become the main inspiration for me. I write my parts around the effect I'm using (or synth patch, whichever you want). The only acoustic instrument I find myself able to really write on, focusing only on the melody is actually piano, even though I'm awful at playing the piano.

some sounds make my ears unhappy, but those sounds could make someone else's ears happy so how could i say those are bad sounds that are not "music"?

who invented "music" anyway??? :idk:

i love fuzz too!

True enough.
Blue’s Theme from “The Wild Angels” sound track would not work at all without the pan head being kicked to life and run up through the gears.

I've never understood bashing anyone else's playing. If they enjoy it, who gives a flying fuck? You rarely HAVE to listen to anyone.

I DO understand the cork sniffers who don't see the genius other people in turning on forty pedals and staring at their feet while open strings ring into oblivion. That being said, I love turning on forty pedals and staring at my feet while open strings ring into oblivion... Just as long as I'M the one doing it. Not saying my racket's better than yours, just that yours isn't as cathartic to me as mine.

Ultimately, I strive to be a great, precise, accurate player, able to handle complex chord changes and quick tempos. There's absolutely nothing wrong with technique, just as there's nothing wrong with a six foot wide board chock full of pedals...that are all on. Is there no room for great players who like unearthly textures?

Don't be afraid to be a good player. It can only help you access the sounds you hear in your head. Some really interesting textures occur due to harmony and melody, not just tonality. Learn interesting chords and figure out WHY they interest you. This way, you'll have them at your command whenever you need them. Learn some three or four note groupings that sound cool OVER those chords so you and your friends can create great stuff in tandem.Being proficient on your instrument doesn't mean you have to play "China Grove" covers all day and do wanky blues solos all the time. There are a million uses for pentatonics outside of wanky blues. Learn the five forms and use them for evil.

At the end of the day, music needs substance. If you can provide both said meat and potatoes plus all the gravy, paprika, cayenne pepper and saphron, you'll truly engage people on numerous and intoxicating levels.

I agree with you Rose.

I don't see why it matters that you can play according to someone else's standards. As long as you play what YOU think sounds good.

I don't enjoy playing completely clean, even amp drive is enough, I love my shoegaze too hard. I only really play textual guitar anyways.

I hardly play my acoustic guitar, I like the sound of singer-songwriter on electric guitars anyways. I only really like acoustic guitars if they're playing in the style of Waste of Paint, by Bright Eyes, really fucking hard.

I was typing this long post, and I had some sort of point, and then I saw that this guy already made it.

Anyways if you spend more time turning knobs and letting "open strings ring" then it can be argued you aren't playing the guitar, but rather playing your effects board. Am I saying this is a problem? No way dude, rock on, whatever it takes to keep you sane! :thumb:
