Under My Thumb/Rolling Stones crunch sound
So, the overdriven guitar in Under My Thumb kinda drives me crazy. I want that sound.

Is there a pedal that can get me close, or should I just turn my v4 up loud?

Are you talking about the fuzzy bass guitar played by Mr. Bill Wyman?
Probably a Maestro FZ-1.
If that's not what you're talking about, it's probably just an overdriven tube amp.

at that point the Stones were Vox endorsers, so Keith is probably playing the "Satisfaction" Les Paul (or possibly a Firebird) into a (probably solid-state) Vox amp with a separate head and cabinet. Bill played a Framus Star Bass, probably into the Maestro Fuzz which was about the only game in town at the time.

Yeah I have/have had the normal version, mini, barbershop, built several different ones, etc
Basically I feel like a good overdrive is good with a crappy amp, great with a nice amp, but never MAGICAL like the right amp with no OD pedal.
They're fun but in my experience/opinion literally none of them compare to the real thing.
Probably the best ones are the ones that serve a purpose other than traditional overdrive. Like the Barbershop can be used to sortof clean up your sound in a cool way. The mini and eff OD are both good boosts and can get pretty fuzzy plus the crackle or bias.. That's what makes them fun. But overdrive still sucks

Please don't get mad at me.

When using a pedal to achieve natural sounding tube amp overdrive, there's always a tradeoff of some sort or another.

I understand that getting real sexy amp overdrive is a pretty excellent feeling, but shunning OD pedals because they don't achieve that... you can use OD pedals for so many different purposes. Saggy and chewy low end, broken transistor sounds, synthetic disaster crunch... Eq, boost...
get that crystal lattice bs out of here.

It feels like you read my post and stopped reading before the last paragraph. And I'm not saying anything about crystal lattice or anything like that. I don't even know what that means

I think the Mini is the first OD that I've found that I've really bonded with because it can get kind of fuzzy if I want it to. But at the end of the day I still like boosting the shit out of my signal going INTO my amp, OD or not to bring out dem toanz and then throw the OD in the giant crater of input signal that is attacking my amp. I have an example of this from my own experiences- Tronographic Rusty Box VS my actual Traynor TS200 amp: TS200 wins!
