That pop was probably there the whole time but you can hardly notice it with low gain in the stock unit. As a compromise, you can shoot for a resistor value that is a little less extreme. Something in the middle like 1k. So other than the pop your happy? Makes me feel good knowing that could help someone out.

Do you think it would be possible to cure the volume drop on the Akai Headrush II in a similar manner?

anything is possible. I have a backup plan when the circuit can't be modded. but most circuits can be modded. so the answer is always yes.
