Death from above 1979... What bass fuzz/distortion.

Post by Radiohead625 »

I'm pretty sure that guy has one of the most kick ass bass distortion tones ever. Any idea how to achieve it without destroying an amp? Something along the lines of a pedal?

yeah dude doesn't use distortion

I heard that he had his ric modded so it's just the bridge pup straight to the jack?

peavey or acoustic SS amp into the biggest cab you can get your hands on

Ya I know the gear he uses, but for jamming in small clubs I was hoping I could figure out something similar using a drive pedal. I've been jamming with this drummer and I want to fill out my sound without cranking my amp. I guess I could go with a small wattage amp, but that will sound pretty thin. Any suggestions.

Rat tail perhaps? It's hard to get that sound without doing it. He also used a chorus to split his signal. I believe this enabled one amp to have the distortion and the other to carry bass. I feel like a rat or tall font muff would get ya close.

Didn't he run, like, a thousand watt power amp into a 400 watt cab with pa speakers in it for distortion?

If I were going for a distorting solid-state amp sound, I'd probably go with either a Rusty Box, a Turbo Rat, or maybe a Tech 21 Oxford.

Jesse F. Keeler's tone and playing style are right up my alley.

That guy is so goddamn cool he actually turned down an invite to join Queens of the Stone Age. Who does that?!?! Jesse F. Keeler, that's who.

That said, I wish he would've joined QOTSA. :(

I have a new best friend.

What everybody else has said, except the fact that on recording You're a Woman, I'm a Machine, I believe he used a Grabber bass and didn't start using the ric until they were touring after that. But yes, the tone and volume pots were all bypass for pure unadulterated signal path.
