You could try to score a used Jerry Jones..

The thing is though that in the end what string you use and how you play the thing will make a bigger impact on different, I can pick up a dano and make it sound totally "normal" and I can pick up a fender or a Ric and do not "normal" it's all in the mind.

I really dig the sound of the Höfner "violin bass". Definitely not the typical fender sound.

Yeah they definitely have their own distinctive sound.

Another thing that sounds different is any bass with one of those crazy huge humbuckers in it, anyone know where the stupidly large bass pickups come from? One of my favourite bass tones is my friend's violin bass copy with 30 year old flats and this gigantic humbucker, it's amazing. Whoever made it the crazy frankenstein it is today was a genius.

Sounds like one of my dream basses.

Grab a Peavey T-40, poor mans Ric.
I actually like mine better than the Rics I've tried.
Yet to encounter one that sounded "awesome" to me.

Yeah, I have played new ones and to me they are meh, look at 70's and 80's ones, they are cheaper and sound better also I think most people don't understand that they can do more then the clank clank sound and with the built in mute you can get some cool/odd upright like sounds or use it almost like a sitar buzz bridge

It's amazing, that bucker has so much output it's hilarious and on a tiny hollowbody violin bass? Shit. After a bit of digging around, the pickup looks a lot like those dimarzio model ones... hmmm, I definitely want a short scale with one of those myself.

I have two different EB basses. One is vintage Japanese, bolt on maple neck I got for free out of a friend's basement everything need work, except the pickups and tuners. Also have the bolt-on Epi with a DiMarzio Model One in the Neck, and made a route for GFS blade guitar humbucker in the bridge. But yeah, flats and Hipshot bridges on both of those.
The Epi EB-0 is a killer bang for the buck.

I know, and it's badass sound But I am thankful they do other sounds

also though for "unusual" look at Gretsch type stuff, they are way off the beaten path still and rather neat

traditionally, most e-bass mutes are made of thick wool felt pads. i think you'd need pretty stiff foam to get a good result, but that's also been used notably on 60s/70s European and Japanese instruments.

BTW if you want to make the bass you already have sound non-standard, try the Bill Wyman position with the neck pointed as close to vertical as you can stand and play with your fingers like a jazz bassist. the position, and the fact that you have to hold the neck up to some extent, deadens/stops the notes when you change the fingering. that and some nylon tape wound flats will have you seeing e.g. your P-Bass in a whole new way.

the cool thing about the Hofner "Beatle Bass" is that it's the only short-scale bass i've ever played that stayed tight all the way down to the open low E. no flippy-floppy shit at all. i don't know if this is true of the clones as well. i reckon it'd turn on the question of neck angle.
