First thing I thought of was Rick, they have such a ridiculously distinctive sound. I can always pick them out on a recording.

Gibson EB-0 and its variants are pretty unusual. They're very dark.
oh also the Fender Mustang basses have a similar style; short-scale, dark humbucker, etc.

Re: Unusual Sounding Basses?
My bandmate built a shortscale custom with a Danelectro longhorn neck he bought off ebay. Set it up with p/j pickups, and it sounds ridonkulous.
It's also really frustrating because I'll sketch out basslines on it, and then when I get back on my full-scale Jazz bass, they're all about 5x harder to play. But hey... good practice, I suppose.

I'm more like a mids-ist than a bassist.

Get you a Dano semi-hollow, stick halfrounds on it, win.
Bonus, they're fvckin cheap.

That's a hard one, because even though you don't want a "fender sound" I can assure you that something like a Stingray, or whatever, is a fairly 'usual' sounding bass--it just doesn't sound like a Fender.

Re: Unusual Sounding Basses?
I am not really a bassist, but I want to foray into bass as I record everything on my music (currently I've only been using a synths for bass).
Thank you for all of the help so far!
Some Q/Responses
Will a violin bass make me just sound like The Beatles?
That Alembic is WAY WAY too expensive.
The Fender was just an example, really. I guess I should probably avoid Stingrays and Ricks as well, because those are common enough that people probably recognize them immediately.
I wish I could just grad one of those cheap Dano guitars, but I'm too opposed to the company on moral grounds.
The Gibson EB-0 looks pretty interesting. How are the *cringe* Epiphone ones?
Hagstrom looks interesting as well, especially since they have semihollow options.
is a fretless bass a pain to learn if I'm not even very good at regular bass?

Alembics are amazing instruments.
Short scale fender music masters can sound cool and cut through.
Rics.
Epiphone jack cassady, ibanez art core, or other semi-hollows are definitely different.
Danelectro longhorn. EDIT scratch that I agree with ya about dano.

Re: Unusual Sounding Basses?
I had a wishbass when they first started. It was actually really fun to play but my fretless intonation was.... uh.... lacking.

Burns Bison.
really unusual and great.
Big, heavy, but split sound makes it all worth while.
