Calling out all Jaguar swingers!

Post by synthezatory »

I need some inputs. I hate these pickups on my avri fender jaguar, the neck sounds muddy and unusable for me.. and the bridge sounds thin that I need to set it up high and REALLY close to the strings just to balance out the output level with the neck's.. which is set pretty low. Combination of both sounds really good though.

I'm looking for the replacement that has a tight lows but not muffled at neck, and good punchy hi-mids but no harshness on the bridge pickup to kick those solo or the mighty strums at the chorus part. Couldn't care less for it being authentic and vintage sounding, if it's good it's good. From what I've gathered so far from other forums, there are the SD Antiquities (I or II), Quarter pounders, Novaks, and the Wizard, etc.. funny enough almost all of them ended up talking about Jazzmaster

I have no idea, all the demos on youtube are just plain sucks for researching pickups at the first place anyway cos most of em are recorded through camera.

Perfect timing! I'ma keep an eye on this thread.
I can't say enough good things about Peter, the pickupwhiz and his pickups. I'm a Jazzmaster guy too (so all of my experience lies there; and I have his pups in my JM now), but I have a Jag coming in a few weeks. It's not a done deal yet - yet - but I'm already planning to order a set of the wiz's pups for it. And if you're not after something that's totally vintage-sounding... email him and strike up a dialogue. He'll wind you whatever you want. He's super helpful.

I'm hoping my Jag's pups are alright - but if not, I'll be looking elsewhere for sure.

The Bare knuckles in my Marr, sound really nice, but they are "vintage cortrect" low outputs. Real warm though, but they are definitely gonna give you a Jag sound.

I've actually been swapping thoughts with Peter as we speak

before i modded the fuck outta my CIJ jag to accept fender noiseless strat pickups, i had some seymour duncan hot for jaguar pickups installed. the bridge had more midrange and wasnt harsh, really warm, nice low end too. the neck sounded like a jag neck pickup but fatter. both had great output for my needs.

I'm loving every set of Bare Knuckles I've swapped in my guitars, hard to go wrong with those. Not sure what all they offer for Jags but they designed the pickups in the new Johnny Marr sig as mentioned. They'll also do a custom set or a rewind if you prefer, get 'em voiced hotter and fatter would be my goal.

It would probably run around $200 for a set of singles and if you price 'em on their web store, be sure and subtract the 20% VAT tax as you won't be paying that.

Curtis Novak or Lollars are both great. Also seymour duncan antiquities. I'm suprised you're having trouble with the neck being to dull sounding, with any pickups!

I've got a SD hot for jag in the bridge and I think it does what you want; it's punchy and bright without being harsh. As for the bare knuckles I've never tried any but I've only ever heard super positive reviews. I've been thinking about hitting them up for a set for a while myself.

And while we're at it, does anyone know who makes custom plate for the pickup switches? I wanna mod it into regular 3-way with a bass cut like this:

I only know this one guy Paul Rhoney, but the waiting period could take almost around 2.5 months since he custom order them from New Zealand and finish everything off here. It's kinda funny isn't it that noone seems to be stand out selling these plates (or I'm just clueless)? Talking about business opportunities

I wasn't a fan of the SD Quarter Pounders but I love the Novaks I've got. The neck sounds very clear and much more dynamic; no mud. I never use the bridge pickup alone but the combination of the two is nice and sparkly.

I got an AVRI too and I love the way it sounds but I've always had problems with feedback unlike I've ever heard or experienced before. I used to think that may I had a shielding issue or the pickups needed repotting but after a long time out in the closet, it's been behaving a lot better. Any ideas? I was going to replace them and still might but I figure I should wait as long as I can.

This guitar seems like it is one of the best engineered designs Fender has made in a while.

I'd love to try one out because it seems like I'd love it, especially in ORANGE.
