yeah leave the bass plugged in but turn down it's volume control. crank the knobs on the amp and lightly tap tap on the tops of the tubes. you'll hear if there's anything awry pretty easily.

I am actually really upset here.
If I can't get it working tonight, it's into the shop.

I just gave all the jacks a good cleaning and it seems to have worked, the sound is gone.
May have just been a bad connection.
But I'll see if the sound reappears.

Even more strange sounds have appearing.
I've narrowed it down to one output jack on the back with I think has gone south.
My cab is in for some looking over by some with much more experience than I.
Here's hoping everything gets resolved.
