I might be biased because I hate Chino Moreno as a vocalist anyway, but Cliff Meyer's guitar work here just does absolutely nothing for me either. It's so boring.

I guess I may be biased since I was expecting something more like Old Man Gloom but with less noise and hardcore vocals...
I think it's obvious that Aaron wanted to get back to the insanely heavy/sludge stuff, and the rest of the guys wanted to keep going in the atmospheric/psych direction that Isis had been going their last few albums.
This is much more up my wheelhouse than the Old Man Gloom stuff, so I'm happy.

Also, this. Not to dis Aaron or anything, but the death growls have never been my thing.

Lol to each their own opinion on music tastes.
I've been on a real OMG, Zozobra, Cave In, Converge, and Doomriders kick lately, so it could very easily be my perception on how I hoped for Palms to sound. I'll definitely give their album a spin when I can get it. I happen to love almost everything Aaron has had his hands in, but the whole family of ISIS have made some incredible music as well.

I liked it. I might not like it as much if I listen to it 20 more times or something.....But I've always thought that Chino had a great voice. He can hit pretty cleans and he can make sounds like he's about to puke his guts out in the same sentence.
I kind of like that sludge had/has kinda crappy vocals. Older Baroness, and Kylesa don't have the most...uhh...refined vocals, and if they had more refined vocals, it wouldn't sound right. This is a tangent, so I'll wrap it up, but think about Lamb of God and all those bands who use "methods" of screaming....they all sound alike to me. Cookie-cutter metal.

edit: what's the other good stuff? hope it's better than that palms track, it's alright but pretty boring... i didn't make it clear through it...
Well it depends on what you liked about ISIS. Spacier stuff? The last Red Sparowes was pretty fantastic. Sludgier riffs and more aggressive? Old Man Gloom's No album was quite fucking fantastic.

Agreed. I like a bit of aggressive character in sludge, doom, and post-metal. Otherwise to me it seems to loose the overall effect of the music.

i like both oceanic and panopticon beginning to end.
if i had to pick a favorite track it'd be a fight between so did we and backlit. at the moment i've had a couple beers and think backlit would win...
