OpAmp Questions

Post by Isher »

I'm no electrical engineer, but I'm adept with a soldering iron. I ordered the GGG Marshall Guv'Nor kit, and was curious about overdrives. I know the original was a TL072, but I have heard that the TL082 can be used interchangeably resulting in less brightness and more girth. I haven't really had a chance to try this myself, but was curious what other opamps I can try. I was gonna solder in a socket and just buy a few different kinds to try. Can I use an LM308N like a Rat?

No an LM308N has a different pinout and is only a single op amp whereas the TL072/82 type are dual op amps. You can use a 4558 or any of its many variants. Just look up the datasheet for whatever op amp you want to try and make sure the pinout is the same. Just google the part number or use this http://www.datasheetcatalog.com/

I think the only difference between TL072 and TL082 is that the 82 drives more current IIRC. reduced brightness could be the miller effect making all your caps sound like bigger caps and loosing brightness.

you can use

TL072
TL082
JRC4558
NJM4558
LM1448
LM1558
LM358

Or it could be that its fatter sounding because it's driving more current!

In my experience, I've found that sonic op-amp differences are minimal. Play around with other parts of the circuit!!!
