Maybe price point and longevity is the point...at least that's all I can think it being. I imagine you wouldn't have to switch them out if they are solid state...right....?

I don't know... Those heat sinks suggest they create a lot of heat, and from my understanding of electronics more heat=less longevity for your components. So, depending on how expensive they are and how soon they wear out, there's a chance you wouldn't save anything in the long-run by switching to these things. So, yeah.... I do not understand why anyone would buy these, or who their intended market is.

There's a demo someone did with the jet city and a few other tubes that was a blind test. I never realized how sweet tung sol's are...

The heat sinks are there because they likely contain power MOSFETs running at extremely high (tube like) voltages. I've never used any solid state stuff at over 9v but I'd imagine they'd last ages - tens of years? I dunno, I think it's a solution to a problem that doesn't exist.

maybe someone else here is better informed on the situation, but I always assumed that tube production would just stop at some point. maybe 20+ years in the future, but still. production is already limited to a few places, and only a few varieties are readily available.

having a contingency plan doesn't seem like a bad thing, but if these don't sell well enough, they won't be available either.

It's a solution when tube production hits snags again.

Back in the late 80s and early 90s, you didn't have the choices you do today. It was NOS or Ruby (then actually half decent) or GT or luck of the draw whatever Eastern Bloc stuff you could find.

Some tubes had no Eastern Bloc equivalent - so it was hell to find them for older wierd amps, some Ampegs, etc.

Same with rectifier tubes - the solid state drop-in of the time was often better than what you could find for the Fender BF stuff.

This is an option for the future, or for situations when you don't want to deal with the hassles of glass. Give me a set of these, for instance, as a backup tube set that won't die or require special handling in my bag of backups or tools.

And frankly if they work this opens up all sorts of options - power scaling on the tubes themselves, for instance. Imagine Yellowjacket adapters that actually sound good.
