Really dig it! It is fat, a bit on the dark side and has a lot of output. P90ish kind of. But still its own vibe going on. I think, it is a pretty good combination: telecaster and charlie christian neck pickup. Fender thought the same: i saw couple weeks ago at Musikmesse 2013 a telecaster at the fender booth with the same combination as stock model.

No, not really. Would be the obvious influence for sure. I ran across an interview in a german magazine with Johnny Hiland back in 2004 or so. I'm not sure, if i recall it correctly because i can't find any picture of Hiland playing a tele with CC nor a statement that he did. But it was def. not Gatton*.
That picture of me playing that guitar (btw live), is from october 2005. I bought a new mexican telecaster and a Lollar Charlie Christan PU. My buddy and i did the routing in his kitchen. It was the first routing we ever did. And started right with a new fender telecaster   Crazy times. My buddy does now stellar builds on his own: http://www.eastside-guitars.de/ That telecaster modding was a kind of initial ignition for him. I never finished my first guitar build that i started in 2005... I'm more into playing than building :idk:

*That tele had Danny Gatton (Joe Barden Tele blades (old ones, 90ies production) pickups first. After the neck pu was replaced with the CC, the Gatton stayed in the bridge, until i replaced it some years ago with a Lollar.

That was kind of a joke, Gatton was the first person I saw playing a Tele w/ a CC.

Hiland, however, was undoubtedly influenced directly by Gatton.

Nothing wrong with your guess. Got me thinking about my influences. Back in that time a lot of Country stuff (e.g. Will Ray).

Yeah, when I'm not playing boneheaded rock 'n' roll power chords, I've come to realize, my playing's a lot more influenced by country pickers than I'd previously thought.
