They sound pretty similar, don't they? How do you like the King's Head? Tempted on that one...
They do sound similar in uni's clip but they sound totally different side by side, sorta like opposites of one another. Think I may prefer the Santa Muerte which surprised me, figured I'd be all about the King's Head. Don't get me wrong, both are incredible, just liking the the SM a bit more outta the gates.
The King's Head is super thick and smooth with TONS of midrange in the voicing. At lower gain settings it's fantastic for rhythm playing or beefing up single leads lines. As gain increases, it tends to get even thicker and offer up tons of sustain while maintaining that midrange voice, nothing over the top in terms of highs or lows. Stays nice and tight tho, no flab, sounds fantastic. The hi-cut switch is useless with my amps/guitars, sounds far better on the normal setting.
The Santa Muerte is a unique sounding beast, far more focused and present with obvious lows and highs as opposed to the all midrange voice. At the lowest gain settings, it gets raspy and sputtery, sorta like the broken speaker sound on a standard Fuck OD, really cool and useable sounds. As you go increasing gain, it gets more focused, has more low end, and gives you a great sustaining lead tone with fantastic decay. It sounds really punchy with my setup, very dynamic and clear cutting right through the heaviness it's dishing out. It can excel at rhythm or searing lead lines, just voiced really, really well.
Both are incredible and the way Mike at Monolith describes them as "sister fuzzes" is pretty much right on. They compliment one another so well and both excel at completely different things, sonically speaking. As for finish, WOW, they're both GORGEOUS and the guts are something to see. Old school component goodness just crammed in that little enclosure, don't own many fuzzes myself that utilize the whole NOS component thing. I like it.
