Mysterious instrument/box/pedal on Kurt Vile's new record?

I went and purchased Kurt Vile's new record and found this fellow holding some kind of box or pedal or instrument and I have no idea what it is. Any one have a clue?

Fred Frith once wrote me a long, very nice and polite email explaining he had no idea how to build a pickup holder for the headstock like the one he uses.
