Too late!!!! If I have a boy, he's most likely going to get circumcised. Mostly because I am. And because it seems to be such a common thing here - I only know of two of my friends who aren't cut, one of whom was born in Australia and didn't move here until he was like 8 or some shit.

Very jealous you get to see KWC. I missed them on Monday - they were a couple hours away, so there was no way the wife was going to go for that show on Monday, me getting drunk and us going to Skynyrd last night, and a bachelor party for one of my buddies out of town on Saturday. Sigh...adult life

Speaking of Skynyrd - things I learned last night:
- I still really want an Ampeg SVT, and I had no idea how much cool shit is going on in the bassline of Skynyrd songs.
- Les Pauls are, in fact, the best kind of guitar. They were working with a three guitar mix and the one dude who played an LP the whole night was always more prominent than the other two guys no matter what guitars they played. Made the strat one of the guitars played sound like a toy.
- I want to start playing piano again because holy shit the guy on keys was the best part of the band.
- Wilmington is full of white trash and I love it more because of that.

compressors of the Ross/MXR variety aren't very useful to me because they're such one-trick devices. for me a compressor needs an Attack and a Release control to be really useful, and Ratio is nice too.

Congrats on the kids guys. My son has been the best part of my life. I'd put him down by my pedal board and let him tweak knobs while I played before he could talk. He's really gotten into any kind of music. He's the only 5 year old I know who has his own record collection.

my big mystery in the weiner-alteration debate is the claims that one's penis is "less/more sensitive" depending on whether the member is circumcised. have there been, like, tests where people went from point A to point B and then filled out ScanTron cards about their relative sensitivity? seems conjectural.

I have no idea how they test for these things, but they can test sensitivity in other parts of the body, so it makes sense that they can test the penis. The foreskin protects from bumps and knocks when you're walking, itchy underwear, etc.

It can be a frightening experience as an infant to have your penis lobbed. I imagine it'll be even worse when you're able to make decisions yourself, which is usually at the age of 6.

so you don't get me wrong: we were not born with the strength to squat our own weight on a bar as adults - but we should all attain it if we want to call ourselves strong. and attain it you shall if you strive for it


and of COURSE, we all start somewhere. I start my clients off with bodyweight before the bar - technique comes before weight on the bar, there are only a handful i've trained who've done more than 40 kg the first time i've had them squat and that was almost always because they had done similar things before (or the exact same thing).

You actually are a personal trainer then? That's cool. I'll definitely send you a PM some time. For now I think I'm going to work on full body workouts. Monday focuses on chest, shoulders and triceps; Tuesday focuses on biceps, back and traps; and Wednesday will focus on legs and abdominals. But instead of working on specific exercises, I think I'll go back to full body workouts to help loose fat and build up endurance rather than mass.

I've been doing a modified Starting Strength for the last four months. Highly recommended. I'm gradually adding a bit more muscle-specific stuff in, as I'm less interested in being able to hurl around tons of iron than I am having a decent body. Midsection is still soft, but everything else is coming along nicely. I squat 3x a week, and as a result have added more chest/bis/shoulders so I don't wind up lopsided.

OK, so I've jumped in way too late, again...but I don't think circumcision is medically necessary anymore. I agree with Captain on that stuff.
On the subject of it being culturally justifiable, the only question I would ask anyone to ask themselves is "how involved in your religion/cultural background are you/your partner, and is it worth the procedure if the answer is one that goes beyond a mere matter of fitting in? Personally I feel that if you're doing a good job as a parent then your giving your kids enough self esteem to basically say to the other kids at the trough/in the locker room "yeah, my dick is uncut, stop looking at my junk". I don't know anybody that has really ever made a big deal about that shit and if they did, you'd be questioning their motives. Having said that though, I do understand that it just isn't a big deal in Australia and that high school in America appears to be some kind of brutal political Game of Thrones played by arseholes. There's all the other cultural alienation that comes with it though, and I understand that. I'm trying to raise my children atheist and all my wife and I get is static from my mum and my nana (who are VERY Catholic), its annoying, but you gotta raise YOUR kids the way YOU want to. They are yours, fuck what other people think, raise them to inherit the shitty world our grandparents and parents have left use and then to change it for the better.
My brother in law's partner died the other day and we've been trying to work out how to explain it to our 2yo without saying "heaven" or "she's gone to sleep". It's tough.
Sorry, I'm way to passionate on the subject of raising independent thinkers. Children are a blank canvas, adults should be too I think. Have an open mind and make decisions that make sense, may benefit all of us and don't harm others, above all.

I have that weird archivist or hoarder feeling where I don't like to get rid of some things because I don't know when I would use it or I just like having an arsenal at my disposal. I have sold off a few things that I no longer use but for the most part I have a collection of shit that just sits there. There are a few things I wish I still had though.

I am like that with certain things. I have gear that i just will never part with even though i never use it. I'm thinking that i'm just pretty satisfied with my pedalboard right now other than swapping out the El Cap for other pedals that I have had before and miss again. Same thing with my Cool Cat trem. I wanna swap it for a TR2 or just abandon trem all together and go for some octave goodness.

I'd go with trem. Unless I were going to do some really crazy stuff like making a high pass filter / lo fi sound I would save the money spent on an eq pedal and just mess with my rig a little more.

Sorry to hear about your demons. Glad to hear you have a grip on them now though. When you are ready to come back you will have a fellow doom roomer here in Brooklyn to hang out with. I'm not planning on going any where, any time soon. I love it here.

I have been to Main Drag a bunch, but have never actually tried out a pedal there. It wouldn't surprise me that they would allow you to choose a pedal out of the case and try it out. I know Ludlow Guitars in Manhattan does it, as I have tried out a few pedals there, so I don't see why main drag wouldn't allow you too. Knowing the staff there, they would be real cool aout it. Main drag has some great stuff that cycles through there too with all the musicians in the area. Synths, amps, guitars, basses. Great stuff.
