Don't tell me I want a chorus pedal.

Post by D.o.S. »

Ok, so I was getting my warbles on with my Whammy IV's detune. And I like the motion it provides. I know this is a chorus function, but I don't want a chorus. Or do I? I think what I'm looking for is that LFO sound that staggers in and out of focus, like a boat rocking on the ocean or a focusing-in-and-out camera shot (ala any POV shot that focuses on getting knocked out--a lot of first person video games use that).

I've got a flanger, but to my ears that goes "up and down" rather than the "in and out" sound I'm getting from my Whammy. Also, as much as I love my flanger, the bypass sucks something awful.

Why not just use the Digitech? Because i'd like to use the octave/harmony features in combination with the detune, and because I'd like a more control over the LFO parameters.

Suggestions?

Iron Ether Polytope. It has up to 4 voices detuned. I assume you've checked the Cosmi?

I'm a total chorus noob. I've always thought it sounded wicked cheesy and never really had a proper allocation for it (until now).

Also, this is going to be for the bass. I'm not sure if that's super important for chorus pedals or not.

Re: Flanger--it's the venerable DODFX72 that I've had for a kazillion years. Sounds rad, but again, the bypass sucks, and the switch is going. :idk:

Regarding the difference--It's that classic "ascending/descending" flange sound that I'm not trying to replicate.

If I'm just adding words to attempt to describe the tone I'm looking for, I'll go with that cassette tape flutter, too.

And, actually, that helps with the tone, too. I generally prefer modulation that sounds like it's in soft-focus.

I hope any of that makes sense.

Holowan Tape Soup or an EQD Sea Machine.

Can't describe the Tape Soup in words very well, but PumpkinPieces did a demo of it. & there's a knob on the Sea Machine (shape?) that morphs the LFO from a triangle/sine to a square and in-between. Sound awesome on really slow settings.

I have the Polytope and Cosmi v3. Both are excellent and capable of a wide variety of normal "lush" chorus or totally whacked out shit like a Polychorus or Sea Machine.

I prefer the Cosmi honestly, simply sounds better and fuller to my ears. The Polytope voice controls and detune are super cool tho...

If you want the very sterile, no movement type digital chorus the Whammy does in detune mode, try the Mooer Pitch Box. It has that same detune mode and is on the cheap and sounds very clean. If you want warble and vibrato, Cosmichorus or Sea Machine. That Jack Deville Double Chorus also seems awesome. You mentioned tape flutter; nothing like a really short slapback on a tape echo. It'll give you that sort of random or erratic detune in the tape flutter. And El Capistan/Timeline is great for this because you can really fine time the tape flutter.

EQD Sea Machine. Fr' serious. It's downright amazeballs.

Maybe a rainbow machine with the magic around 2/3, and pitch a little off center?

Aiight, so I've just read that the Sea Machine doesn't allow 100% wet?

I'm not sure I can get down with that (in principle, that is).

I didn't really like chorus that much until I heard the cosmi v3. It can get really warbly and staggering. Disorienting yet still full and pleasant to the ears. It feels very natural, plus you can make it 100% wet for vibrato madness. With the hold function engaged you can get some whammy bar-ish sounds. In fact, I don't care for chorus on guitar but on bass it can be a nice enhancer. Plus it sounds killer in stereo!!!
Fuzz, reverb, delay.
