I have a question: For personal amusement more than anything else, I was considering whether it was possible to grab a 4x12 and convert it into a 2x15 by building a new front panel and changing the wiring.
Anyone done anything similar?
I think these electric cabs are the same size as a 4x12.
I though about doing this with an orange ppc412 cab, but the baffle is screwed in from the front, and it would be a real PIA. but if you do, let us know! maybe a matamp cab would be build differently and easier to change.
How is it screwed in from the front? Are the screws under the tolex? If so, that really sucks and would be really hard to work with.
conky wrote:What drew me into Sabbath was when a guy came up to me in 8th grade Social Studies class and gave me a tape of Black Sabbath's first two albums on it and said "You have a drumset. You are going to be in my band or I will stab you in the neck with a pencil." I took it home and listened to it and fell in love with Bill Ward's drumming. Huge impact on me and as much as I love Iommi and Geezer's riffing, fuck them. It ain't Sabbath without Bill Ward holding it down.
I used to run a compressor when I had a rackmount preamp and poweramp. It tightened up my gain the way I had it set and squished alot of the dynamics out of it. I was in a straight up death / grind band at the time and it helped get my tone a little tighter and more focused. I need to sit down with one and figure out how to get those chickin pickin spanky cleans with a compressor though. I've always loved those tones.
I know what you mean about the chicken picky thing. Like I said before, i was fooling around with a surf rock tone for the hell of it and damn a compressor would be great for that.
There are definite advantages to compressors. Conky, that is the most awesome sabbath/teenage music story ever. I agree with you, and everyone else about the bill factor. I bought my ticket before bill got the arse and I was super pissed when I found out he was out. Fuck Sharon. I was kinda meh about ozzy too. Ozzy sabbath to me is the only sabbath, but ozzy these days...but I'm resolved to the fact that it is an exercise of pilgrimage to the holy land of riffage, Zion of the lord Iommi. I saw the last heaven and hell tour as well, geezer is a prophet. Also, thanks Ax, I'll keep an eye out there.

I was just messing around with a cmatmods Ross Comp clone the other night and from what I can tell it's not really something that is going to enhance much of the stuff you already have down(since it was written to sound good without the comp) but generally is beneficial if you find another dynamic to add to your tonal pallette with them.
I can't say I really like the sustain knob anywhere past 12 o' clock...may add more sustain but makes immediate control of the feedback and harmonics a tad latent. I kind of liked it with the sustain at about 10 o' clock for faster riffing, does the opposite of what I previously mentioned in that case, gives you more immediate control in a faster situation of your feedback and dynamics(which is great for the surf rock purposes The Wood Wizard seeks)
Another thing I noticed about it was that it made the attack nastier, gave it just a bit more of a percussive grit to each note.
Personally, I don't think my sound or playing could ever tolerate a comp engaged 100% of the time, but I could see myself writing some riffs that are highlighted by what the comp does best.
Also it has to be a good comp...the Boss CS series is garbage, so much so that a behringer dyna comp clone i've used sounded way better and seemed to be overall more useful...This cmatmods comp trumps them both...pretty bummed the one I scored didn't come with the optional "Attack" control...but i'll deal.
I've found sustain on about 1-3 and output so it's just the slightest amount of drive/volume boost is not overbearing but makes your tone real fat/thick. Like this:
The biggest problem I have with most guitar stomp box compressors is that they don't have all the controls that "normal" compressors have and a lot of the times the controls are labeled wrong. On most guitar compressors the threshold is usually internally set and only sometimes has a trim pot. This kinda bothers me as it means I can't really set when the compressor will start to act. So I can't regulate whether it will just control my loud peaks or more of my signal.

Not sure if the model I have has it...but I know for a fact the 4 knob Cmatmods has a the internal trim pot that you can mess around with to taste.

Oh yeah, some do. I'm just thinking of a lot of the dyno and ross clones that are just two knobs and don't have the threshold trim, if I remember correctly. I am just finishing up my classes on audio engineering and just being snobby. And because the teachers are always on our ass about setting the parameters right so you don't get pumping or too much distortion.
I just built the other guitarist in my band a keeley four knob compressor and he seems to love it. It is based off the ross circuit but with the added controls.
