1/4 Jacks

Post by The4455 »

So I ordered these on accident:

When I wanted stereo 1/4 in jacks. Can I still use the ones I have? I've already passed the return date, would anybody be willing to trade the ones I have for stereo jacks? I have six, and I need none of them.

you can still use them. they are pretty cheap jacks so I try not to use them unless it is for a project I'm not sure about and I want to try something cheap. tayda shipping is so cheap that it doesn't make sense for someone to buy these from you unless its $3 total shipped. you can make the min order from tayda for $5 and get the correct jacks. save stereo jacks for PNP fuzz

The ones you put a link to are stereo jacks, they are just shorting type jacks. The tip is shorted to the sleeve when no cable is plugged in. You can always bend that tab or break it off if it interferes with what you are trying to do. Most people use a stereo jack for the input of their effects to use the ring to sleeve connection that is made with a regular TS cable to complete the battery ground circuit. This keeps the pedal from draining the battery when you unplug the input cable.

So just to clarify, I took two pictures. The tab that's colored black is the one I should ignore right?

The easiest way to find an answer is to stick a cable into a the jack, and use your multimeter to see what is connected to what. :)

you can also see the metal with your eyes. see how they sandwich metal / fiberglass / metal / fiberglass / metal / fiberglass / metal / fiberglass / metal. each metal ring has a solder lug and a contact.
