Re: Student kills burglar with samurai sword
The guy didn't deserve to die - some of you are being fucking creepy, he's not a rapist or a murderer, just a non-violet robber - but at the same time the student probably doesn't deserve charges. Self-defense is a powerful justification here, given the threatening nature of a home invasion and the apparent lack of intent to kill.

I think calling him a "non-violent" robber is a stretch. He claims the guy lunged at him before he swung the sword. What was he trying to do, hug him?
Invading someone's home is a horrific crime. It violates their sense of security and can be just as traumatizing as an assault or any other violent crime. If I was ever confronted with an invader in my house, I wouldn't hesistate to fucking kill him if he was doing anything other than running away.

You guys realize it said 29 prior CONVICTIONS.
The dude may not have deserved to die, but if you get CONVICTED of the crime THAT many times, call it fucking karma.

"Killing him is justifiable" is entirely different from "He deserved to die," and you guys are smart enough to comprehend the difference.

Excuse me, I never said he deserved to die. All I said is that if I was in this guy's place, judging by the facts as we know them, I would have done something very similar.

I dunno. The kid prolly fuckin panicked. It's not like he's known for running around with a samurai sword and fuckin GTA Vice Citying that shit all day everyday.
Either way, burglar was a moron. Regardless of his reasons for stealing, be it poverty, family, or greed, it was fuckin stupid of him to rob a place twice (supposedly) and expect the dude not to protect his home.
Hypothetically, if the kid was a father with children in his house we'd see it as more of a heroic act. But he's not, he's a kid protecting only himself (and his roommates?) and so therefore he's worth a bit of controversy.

But you do agree that rapists and murderers deserve to die? We're not being entirely clear here.
I don't agree with the non-violent robber distinction, because all robberies are in a sense an act of violence (whether it be physical or in the sense of violating property)
and since nobody has done it yet...

I don't really know the answer to that question. I'm just happy that I don't get the opportunity to make a decision. Well, my first jury duty is coming up in a few weeks, so that may change...

Oh my comment was more targeted at someone else...forgetting to quote ftw.
I've lucked out so far with jury duty...just a lot of sitting around reading a book and getting dismissed
