Not so much heavy, as much as 'dense', but:

This is definitely a band that kinda pulled me out of music stagnancy a year and a half ago or so when I was feeling kind of jaded.
Also, going back a few pages, whoever mentioned Tunnel Blanket by This Will Destroy You: That album fucking rules.

Negură Bunget, Ufomammut, Old Man Gloom, maudlin of the Well, Neurosis, Enslaved, Swans, and Goatsblood.
I think the best fresh/heavy/awesome band is still Acid Bath. Heavy music probably peaked right there for me.

I would say bands like Swans and Neurosis are basically providing the dictionary definitions of the boundaries of heavy music at this point. They're institutional (and super fucking awesome, obvs.), but not really pushing forward in the way I think of when I think of this thread.

Really dug this track. I know just what you're saying when music get stagnant. Hasn't happened to me in a long time.
Tunnel Blanket along with Halfblood by Horseback threw me into drone last year faster than I was heading before. Yes that album takes the cake for me.

I was listening to it at work last night to keep me mellow and stop me from murdering all the idiots that encroach upon my place of employ.

How has no one mentioned Fuzzifer(Bassus' band) yet? If you haven't heard, you really, really should
