Custom Pedal Boards?

It is a little heavy
I haven't weighed it yet but I will try

Right now it is hard to move because I don't have the lid yet

I may be replacing the side panels so that I can redrill for better jack mounts and power mounts

Also I am thinking of tweaking the top so that I can pull it off and play with the power stuff, right now it is held down with screws and I think I can use threaded inserts intstead

Also I have a 24x24 piece of birch ply left that i may build a smaller board with

How much did materials cost you, hbomb? The more I'm looking around the more I'm thinking something that I work out with myself and one of my bandmates (considering I'm pretty much a retard when it comes to power tools) is going to be my best option, at the end of the day.

the other option for you, which is what I was using before is two medium sized boards, it works well and you can work around microphone stands and things of that nature

Also I've been kind of actively avoiding the two-board thing; my shit is already a mess and i feel like splitting it into two boards would only further create a mess. I never use a microphone because my primary role in my band is to make beep-boopy noises. Plus we're some sort of poor excuse for a post-rock band, plus my voice is terrible and makes small children cry.

I guess I just want something really streamlined and sleek, and I think the only way I'm gonna be able to get that (considering my current stable of pedals plus things I'm planning on adding) is to build it my way.

yeah then building your own is a great idea

I think I am in it about 60 for materials so far, I always end up buying stuff for projects around the house when I am at the hardware store so that is a best estimate

I already had stain and clear coat so that didn't set me back
the biggest expense is probably the 25 feet of velcro I picked up


This is the first board where I actually bought wood, usually I just use scrap stuff from other projects

I will most likely end up using wood as well. Though I need to do some hard thinking about design. At the end of the day, I spend WAY more time twiddling knobs than I do playing my guitar with any level of proficiency. While it's nice to have all my pedals at foots reach for stomping and such, often times I feel like I should just build some sort of pedal synthesizer case so that everything is at waist level and easy for me to access with my fingertips.

Sixty bucks really isn't that bad though; for some reason I thought it would have costed way more. Shows how much I know about hardware related projects.

yeah I think once I buy some corner pieces and stuff to make it nice the price is going to sneak up, but we will see!!

Waste height board is not a bad idea,
I used to keep my feedback looping stuff on a keyboard stand, worked really well

one thing I would say is lay everything out several times and measure
set it up on the blank piece of wood and even plug in and test stuff
because it is pretty custom it is pretty permanent

I am now debating pulling everything to make some tweaks and changes

Being patient is huge on a project like this

Yeah I'm really fighting the urge to just rush it and throw something new together, but I'd rather take the time to make it look good and make sure everything is good. Thanks for the advice!

it's tough because I want to play as much as I want to build anything most days so I had a small board while I was finishing the big one

waiting for a few things to come in to complete another satisfying small board and i will probably tear down, finish the top and all the jacks and finalize things

My only complaint when i bought it was the carpet (My cat thinks it is a scratching post), but they offer tolex now. The second level riser velcros on to the base so you can move it and adapt it as necessary, and they make it perfectly sized to fit a PP2+ under it. they aren;t the cheapest, or the most expensive, but they work very nicely.

How much padding is there on the cover? I'm thinking about getting one of these but I've concerns about whether it could protect the pedals if the velcro is loose and they start bouncing around inside the box when it is on its side.

I've never had a pedal come off the board. Even the second riser stays put at all times. There is a layer of foam in the top of the lid. its maybe 1/2inch to 1 inch if i had to guess?


there i everything on my board. it is probably the sixth total reorganization of the whole board, and the velcro has never given me issues. if anything, the velcro is almost too strong. i had to basically stand on the board once to pull my dl4 off the board cause i put too much velcro on the bottom of it.

Material for making your own board is cheap. The tools to make it with aren't.

I just put car carpeting from Autozone on the board. Saves you shit loads in velcro.

it does if you already have the other side of the velcro on your pedals

I also wanted to show as much of the wood as possible, with all the pedals and wires still isn't that much

as far as tools are concerned, the home depot sells precut plywood if a table saw is a problem or will cut boards to size for you which is pretty cool
