The Harshness!!!!
As you may know, I rep the Fender Blues DeVille 4x10 a lot around here, and while I love the tone to death, the highs are just too harsh with my violent picking style. I still like my trebly surf tones but the icepick chords I get sometimes with single coils is too much a higher volumes. I'm guessing I should just replace the V1 preamp (and MAYBE the V2) with a 12au7 to calm the highs down. Good idea? Tube suggestions?

Re: The Harshness!!!!
Hmm switching to a lower gain tube tike a 12Au7 or 12AT7 will give you less break up to begin with.
Some of the nos tubes would roll off some of the highs, others like Mullards will enhance the top end and not do what you want.
I personally would swap out some coupling caps to allow more bass and lower mids through.
Or get a Dark Boost.

Well I have a boost to give me the amp break up I need, and like I said I like my surf tones so more headroom really isn't a problem.

By the time the tone is low enough to get the harshness away, my guitar just sounds like a shit-bear.

That's also what I was thinking, I'm in a 2 piece right now, so once I start playing shows I'm going to buy a cabinet anyways...

Think I'm gonna go with a Dark Boost. How clean is it exactly?
