Good cab to pair with Ampeg VT-22/V4?
So I want a new cab and I'm at a complete loss as to what to do.
I have an Ampeg VT-22 with the original square magnet Altec speakers I absolutely love.
I've been pairing it with a VHT 2x12 cab with v30s in it that I've been running with it that sounds alright.
But I want something different. I'm sort of tired of v30s, and really want to try something new.
I'm unsure what to do though. I've got a (somewhat) limited income at the moment, and don't want to lose money buying and selling and trading things.
Does anyone have any recommendations? I'm pretty much wide open to suggestions. Not sure if I want a 4x12, 2x12, 2x15, or what.
I just have no idea what to pair it with. I've tried it with a 2x12 traynor cab with greenbacks and it was decent, but I didn't love it.
I just want a sound that is big and clear. Nothing too spikey or boomy, just nice and big.
So what have you guys found works with your V4/VT-22? I have no real budget, but the cheaper the better. If I really want it, I'll save up and get it.
And for the record, I've already priced out an Emperor cab with webers and don't think it will be worth the hassle after shipping. But maybe.
I also am in a unique position of having a family member in the trades, and I could ask my pops to help me build a sweet cab for my birthday and load it with whatever speakers I want.
I could probably build an awesome 4x12 for a semi-reasonable price, and hopefully get something that sounds decent.
So what do? Anyone have any good suggestions? Even if something is rare, or hard to find, etc. I don't mind waiting and hunting it down. Usually when I buy something I keep it for a long time.
Thanks d00ds.

i have a v2 paired with a 1x15 - it slays and is still smaller than a 2x12 which is nice for carrying.

Always nice to match with Ampeg cabs. I've paired my V4 and V2 each really successfully with combinations of SVT 810s, V4 412s, old B40 410s, V6B 215s, and a V2 412...all of them sound good but not necessarily together. B/C your VT22 is open back, it may project a lot louder than a paired sealed/closed-back cab, which may or may not be to your liking.
Sometimes it works when one cab is overpowering another...but not always.
A VT22 extension 212 cab DOES exist, just rare and expensive when you find them. I didn't dig the one I tried I think b/c of the port in the front, but might work perfectly with your amp.

Special low-frequency version.

When I had a V4 I found it sounded best out of higher powered (50w or so) Greenback style speakers. I loved playing mine out of the Eminence Legend GB12's. Also got good results out of Celestion 65's. Those two speakers really brought out a lot of life to my v4. I played them in 4x12's.

I sometimes use a 412 with those same Eminence Legend GB12s and it sounds pretty rad.
I really like the Legend 1518s in a closed back 215 cab though. They should sound awesome with what the OP already has and are pretty cheap too.
If you put a WTB add on Craigslist or the Canadian equivalent for empty 215s you'll probably have more offers than you can answer.

I would love to find a matching VT-22 ext. cab one day. Doubt I'll ever see another one up for sale though. Tried to snag one recently and the guy stopped emailing me. Such a drag.
Other matching Ampeg stuff would also rule. I guess 10s might be kind of cool with it. Never really thought about it, but I have a feeling most things would sound decent with it.
Hmm...
With what you're all saying maybe I should just look into a 2x15.
Traynor ones go for $250ish~ on craigslist around here. I imagine they would sound decent?
Might be cool to shake things up a bit. Been using this cab for a few years.

I also abide by the the 2x15 kustom cab. I use one on bass with my v4 and my guitar still manages to be pretty clear and full through he same speakers.
