I really, really, REALLY like them but not sure they're really doing much that's out of the ordinary?

They're pushing the boundaries of how many records a band can release a year though!

True, true. I dunno, I just listen to them and feel as if they're heavier than my conception of what heavy ever has been.

Uhh, define "heavy." :idk:

I love my drone, doom, black metal, etc....but for me one of the heaviest bands ever is the Dillinger Escape Plan.
DISCLAIMER: I LOVE DOOM AND SLUDGE. And there's a fair amount of Black Metal I love too. I'm not trying to shoot either down in the slightest.

But....

Their live shows don't hold a candle, and don't get me all fired up anywhere near to THIS:

And there's no one who sounds like them.

okay so this isn't the heaviest, but they push some boundaries I guess. It's pretty epic none the less:

Listen to the whole album if you get a chance. Cool twists and turns throughout.

I think Boris has done a lot for heavy music.

Yeah, but not all that recently IMO. Those last albums were mostly pretty weak on the heavy front. I did love Attention Please for what it was though.

I think Khanate definitely shook up the sound scape a bit. Doom at its core, but it's so much uglier and more sparse.

I never get how Dillinger Escape Plan plays that technical stuff while going completely crazy... They are calmer in the video above though.

Capture & Release by Khanate is so good. Used to bike through the city listening too that, made the city look like gotham..

This is kinda pushing boundaries, their more experimental side.

Trying to think of the bands that have pushed me forward when all I hear seems stale, and might be new to you.

I've found sikth to be refreshing
Genghis Tron
Naked City
Torche
Agalloch
This Will destroy you- Tunnel Blanket

I'd say all these bands are forward thinking and kick ass
