How do you guys feel about letting bands borrow gear? Say its a small 3 person semi-acoustic band that is friends with your band, and they always open for you when you play together but at EVERY show they never ever ever bring an amp and always ask at the last minute or sometimes don't ask at all until their getting on stage.

My thought is my personal gear is off limits to anyone not in my band, or if I'm playing a show and someones rig takes a massive shit during their set. Then I'm open to the notion of letting them borrow it, but I'm not open to supplying someone with a rig at every show we play together.

I think they should ask ahead of time. That's rude at the very least. are they going to replace gear if it fails while they aare using it? I doubt it. I'd get in touch with them and let them know they need to find gear to use before their next show with you and that yours will not be available to them.

NO...i wouldn't do it. I can't even elaborate on it...it would be just a flat no...and its not because i have great gear, far from it, but still it's the value it hold for me i guess.

If they're friends and they understand the limits and the responsibilities they are undertaking then I think it's OK to let them use your gear. It's hard to accept when it's something you baby, but you have to remember that you using the gear is no different than anyone else using it. As long as they don't abuse the stuff, like you wouldn't, the amp won't tell the difference. It doesn't have a soul linked in with you like you have a soul linked in with it. It's a one-way love affair. With that said, they have to be willing to accept responsibility if they break it.

AASS - well atleast this time they asked the day before  to me its the principle of it, why are you trying to play shows without the equipment to do so?!?!?! Do you know what a mechanic with no tools is? UNEMPLOYED.

Samz. That is exactly what my response is, but if they ask why not I have no issue elaborating and belittling them. Much like my post 2 weeks ago about the guy coming on stage during our set. I'm so fed up with that kind of BS that I have no problem coming off as a dick to get my point across, otherwise they won't learn their lesson.

Dan - The problem is they dont, they are completely oblivious to it. And if they can't even afford to buy their own amp how can I trust they will pay for mine if they damage it? For me its nothing at all to do with the actual gear, but the mentality that they can always borrow gear and rely on other people, instead of being self sustaining and self reliant. I NEVER rely on anyone else, I cover all my bases and keep back ups of everything, and I expect all professional musicians to do the same. Maybe I have unrealistic expectations? :idk:

Then don't let them use it. It sounds like they need to learn an important lesson. I thought they might be friends struggling with gear, which would be something I've been through. Gear shouldn't hold you back from performing, that's my opinion. Sometimes you need a hand to get your ass on that second ledge.

I'm not we are letting them use our backup gear. They are friends but they spend more on clothes then on gear, thats not struggling to me. And I agree, that's the mentality I took with the first 3 shows we did with them but its starting to get really old now.

i'd just tell them how much a new transformer for a vintage Marshall amp costs and if they'd be able to pay for a new one, in case something happened... that would be fun.

so yeah, i wouldn't do it, unless it was something i had arranged beforehand because of something breaking down, whatever, in that case yes, and if knew the guys, knew they were people who know how to use/look after said gear. otherwise, nope. plug straight into the board. if someone in my financial condition can afford decent gear anyone can, with a little hard work.
