New Radiant Storm King

Post by jrmy »

So, this is super last minute, but New Radiant Storm King will be playing in Portland, OR 9/10/09 at Berbati's Pan. NRSK is a great band... just so happens they were the first "indie rock" band I ever saw, and they blew my mind that fateful night back in 1996. Some might say I never recovered.

They started out as a loose n' woolly Pavement meets Sonic Youth sort of thing, but have since turned into a really tight song-centric group... I don't want to say "power pop," but they've definitely come into their own when it comes to melody. Their lead guitarist and co-founder / co-songwriter, Peyton Pinkerton, has also turned into something of an indie-rock session guitarist, and has played & toured with the Silver Jews and the Pernice Brothers.

Anyhow, if any of the Portland folks out there in iLF-land are looking for something to do tonight, I would highly recommend this show. And just to finish the pimpin', here's a couple of recent NRSK vids from YooToob (I really love the second one, Quicksand Under Carpet):

I'm more like a mids-ist than a bassist.

Good stuff. From these clips def more on the indie pop side now but I can hear a Sonic Youth vibe in there. Really dig the second viddy.

Yeah, they've changed a lot since that first show I saw back at the Hampshire Red Barn. As I recall, one song consisted of the bass player reading poetry from a little read leather journal while the guitar player went to town with feedback over crazy drum explosions. They haven't done that for a while...
