Yeah totally, if you're used to heavy strings you'll probably just break light ones and they just sound 'weaker' to me. :idk: No harm in trying though I guess!

Piano(my main one, I suppose; I started on a different one than I use now). Got me into music in the first place, and has continued to teach me more and give me more creative power than any other instrument. Nothing is better for sketching out ideas, or for writing full works that need only one person to play. It also meant that once I started using synths, I was ahead of the game(mono-synths annoy me because NOT ENOUGH EXPRESSION).

Strymon Timeline. The ways in which I can make this thing manipulate my guitar is insane. Put together with other pedals and I can do things like I've never heard before. This allowed me to genuinely explore territory with guitar, which I've liked but aways had trouble writing things which really sounded interesting.

Laptop. It lets me record music, write music(both by arranging what I've recorded etc and by making actual sheetmusic), and listen to what I've done to better learn from it.

1) Stella acoustic guitar: Learned to play on it when I was 16 in 1997... was sitting around in my grandfather's attic so I took it and here I am.

2) Fender Blues Deluxe: First tube amp and I still have it. Got it for $200 in 2000... only recently failed me at a show... starting to get a bit iffy.

3) ProCo Rat: An original small box... $50 off eBay in 2000; best pedal I own, though not my favorite. Recently fixed up by OfficerBukowski.

My Bloody Valentine CD lifted from a comic book store on Valentines Day 1992... Sorry...

Fuzz/Delay... The first time I plugged in an orange and green Superfuzz and a DD3 into my '64 Bandmaster I was DONE...

"Electronic Instruments"... I like Space Noises, got an SK1 for Christmas in 1985 and have been droning those TV samples and Brass Ensembles ever since...

Awesome thread idea!
1) Id have to say laptop as well but not because of everyone elses reasons. It really helped me out because when I started recording (and still sometime) I didn't really understand how to get things on time or how to play with a metronome and arrange a riff/idea into a song and it totally helped me get better at that and better at playing with people.

2) Reverb - I didn't even know what it was, then I saw the knob on my amp and turned it and my brain and balls exploded and that's how people get that coolio echo sound

3) Friends - not exactly "hardware" but fuck it I can touch them - I would be so lost and more mediocre than I am now without my jammates. They were basically accidentally my guitar/music teachers and I'll always be grateful for them being patient and helping me along  :joy:
