Alaska State Fair Gear (Beatlemania content, AND MORE!)

Post by effetebomb »

Hey dudes,

just got back from a weekend at the fair. Had a fun time. The only realy compelling musical thing I saw was "Beatlemania" (west coast cast) which is a beatles cover band, but they were pretty sick. What I really liked was how good they sounded. "John" had two Rickenbacker guitars that he was playing into a Roland Jazz Chorus 120, and the sound was great. "George" (who was asian, or maybe pacific islander) was a great guitarist and he was playing a gretsch into a vintage fender (im not good at identifying them and this one was rocked back. It was definately old by the road wear on it. he had a proco rat for his dirt on "sgt pepper" the sound was really good, despite no orchestra to back it up. "paul" had a violin style bass, but his anp was a very modern SWR head with 4x10 Hartke combo, and the sound was (unsurprisingly) too modern. He also was the worst at selling his persona. "Ringo" was sick, even though his stick posture didnt look authentic. Nice ludwig kit with good sounding shimery cymbals. Overall, it was alot better than a state-fair-playing-beatles-cover-band had any right to be. They did two parts a "hard days night" style thing with all the early stuff, and then put on costumes of the sgt pepper outfits and did the later beatles. the early half was surprisingly more compelling, despite my preferance for the later albums.

there was also "shae laurel" who is this awful traveling celtic band/family thing with alot of stretchy pants and american idol style dance moves. nothing interesting going on gear wise, other than the drum set looked a bit unusual. all the drums looked really expensive, but had first act size diameters, and even shallower depths. (i own some decent first act stuff. this was smaller) I expected a different, but quality sound, but they sounded awful. terrible show. absolutely awful.

and "medicine dream" who were using a few acoustic electrics into rack mounts and spendy cabs to produce the worst guitar toanz ive heard in a while. (and i see a lot of terrible local bands)

I want a roland jazz chorus more than ever now. and i kind of want a rat for the first time.
