Korg MS2000 aka Synth Noob

Post by bugzaney »

I have an oppurtunity to pick one of these suckers up for around $400 used. Is this a good deal? Is this a good synth? Fill me in. Ive been really itching to get into the world of synthesizers but i know so little about them.

i have no idea about the current value of one but it seems ok i guess... maybe $350? i got mine new like 9 years ago and it's still one of my main synths. it seems like a lot of people have a love/hate relationship with them, but if you've ever tried a microkorg and liked it then you'll love the ms2000 - same exact sounds with real keys and almost full knob-per-function. an old roommate and i did some listening tests since he was CONVINCED his microkorg sounded fatter than the ms2000... it doesn't. he just wanted it to. :p

they're not the warmest or fattest, but they can do some cool stuff and the digital patching section is rad (wish it was expanded but oh well).

but you'll have a jillion times more sounds available to you with the MS2000. Mini Brute is monophonic single oscillator (though you can mix the voices)

MS2000 you get multi-timbral polyphonic (2 sets of 2 oscillators LFOs mixers envelopes etc. Essentially giving you the work room of like 4 stacked mini brutes, granted not as "warm")
You get a 16step sequencer and arpeggiator. They're pretty killer. I'm looking for a reasonably priced MS2000b right now myself.
They go around 5-600 depending on quality now. so that's a pretty good deal.

The sound engine of the Micro/MS2k is pretty killer. I still have my MicroKorg even after getting my Moog Voyager if that tells you anything. Different sounds for different purposes. :)

if you only want it for synth bass then get the minibrute, otherwise ms2000.
those 2 are apples and oranges.

ms2000 is 4 voice poly tho. minibrute is mono.

$400 for the keyboard or just the rack?

keyboard thats a pretty good deal.

just the rack maybe not so much.

i love love my ms2000. if you're looking for something more updated, but similar. i would recommend the korg radias. same type of interface. more options. justice uses one :idk:

a price is only as good as what it means to the person paying said price, but FWIW,
it looks like average sold price (meaning someone actually paid that for it, not what a seller listed it for and didnt sell) for the keyboard version is around $500 on ebay.
