Shorty (Noise Rock Band)

Post by FoggyRock »

anybody on this board fans of the band Shorty from Chicago ... the signer and guitar player went on to form the band UP Maple who are also amazing... I really like Shorty's music... my roommate introduced me to this band a few months ago and i've been pretty obsessed... They are kinda like The Jesus Lizard except the guitar tones are a lot dirtier than Duane Denison would use... all in all Shorty are a kick ass band... they also did a cover of Van Halen's hot for teacher which is pretty sweet as well... whats say you ILF? :excellent:

and heres the link for Hot For Teacher...

S H O R T Y ! ! !

Yes, I love that band. I have their first album on vinyl and the Kaput single. The Fresh Breathe Ep is the best, though. Checkout pre-shorty band Snailboy with Al and Shippy. Shorty is fucking rock n roll!

I fucking love this band... the bass does indeed kick ass.. the whole band is tighter than a nun.. and Al's vocals are fucking amazing... LaoWiz i've got those Snailboy songs as well as all the shorty releases... digital copies only though. I would love to get my hands on a shorty vinyl or even a cd... wish they would do a reunion tour like the Jesus Lizard did... i would be there in a heartbeat... SHORTY RULES!!

US Maple are great, too. Have the 1st record with the sheet metal housing. Have the Talker vinyl, too. Lately, I think talker is the best one. Produced by Michael Gira, sounds so creepy and rocking. Like a creepy Beefheart vibe. Both of those records are favs. Good fucking stuff. Too bad Shorty was short lived and less known, Fresh Breath is a balls out turn it up all the way drink hard music. Of that era, shorty and the cows were my favs. Saw the Cows several times and played with them in Kansas city in 94'. They are the best band ever.

Just stumbled on this thread while looking for something else. Shorty is indeed great. The music video up top is genius. Mark is an amazing guitar player. Al is one of the most intriguing and yet hardly imitated vocalists ever.

Is he mic'ing just the side of his mouth / face in this video? Brutal results regardless.

U.S. Maple were one of the best. There are live boots making the rounds on soulseek that I've been really enjoying lately.

Shorty are one of my all time favorites. i was lucky enough to see them a bunch, because their record label (SKiN GRaFT, which the band i am in is actually on) was located here.
Also, I really think the first US Maple record is underrated. it was a bit of a transitional period between Shorty and the (even more) abstract later period Maple (which i think peaked with 'Talker')
from the first one (recently reissued!):

The 1st Maple album is awesome, and I'll rep for "Talker" too despite my personal bias of that one being the 1st album I'd heard of theirs, and in spite of a few purists' yawns that Maple were starting to get a little too friendly, or something.

"The State..." is a stone-cold jam!
